Planning a trip to one of the world's great mountain resorts
The seasons vary around the world. In the Alps and North America, January to March brings the best skiing and June to September the best hiking; in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, with Patagonia at its best from October to April and New Zealand's ski season from June to September. For gorilla trekking in Rwanda, the drier months of June to September and December to February are best, and for Bhutan, spring and autumn. The most exclusive of these hotels have only a handful of rooms, so book well ahead, especially for Christmas, New Year and the peak summer months.
For more, see our regional guides to the Alps, the USA, South America, Central America, Africa, the Middle East, Japan and Sri Lanka's hill country.
