10 Best Mountain Hotels in Central America: Volcanoes, Cloud Forest and Lakes

By the Best Mountain Hotels editorial team ·

Aerial view of tented villas beneath Arenal Volcano, Nayara Tented Camp, Costa Rica

Central America packs an astonishing range of mountains into a narrow strip of land between two oceans. In Costa Rica, cloud forests drip with orchids, rivers carve deep rainforest gorges and volcanoes rise above hot springs. In Guatemala, three great volcanoes stand around Lake Atitlán, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In Nicaragua, a volcano looks down on a lake scattered with islands, and in Belize, pine-covered hills hide waterfalls, caves and Maya cities.

The mountain lodges here are some of the most memorable places to stay anywhere: tents with hot-spring plunge pools facing a volcano, suites lit by candles that can be reached only by raft, a film director's riverside hideaway. These are the 10 Central American mountain hotels in our collection, chosen for their setting, their character and the adventures on their doorstep.

When to go to Central America's mountains

The dry season, from around December to April, is the best time for most of the region, with sunny days, clearer views of the volcanoes and the bluest water in the Río Celeste. The green season, from around May to November, brings afternoon rain, lush forest, fuller waterfalls and lower prices, with September and October the wettest months. Whenever you go, pack a warm layer: nights in the cloud forest and the highlands around Lake Atitlán are cool.

How to plan a mountain trip in Central America

Costa Rica's lodges combine beautifully into a circuit. Arenal, Monteverde and the Río Celeste are all reached most easily from Liberia airport, while El Silencio and Pacuare are closer to San José. Two or three lodges, with a few nights on the Pacific coast at the end, make a perfect two-week trip. In Guatemala, Lake Atitlán is about two and a half hours from Antigua, and pairs naturally with the colonial city and Tikal. Blancaneaux is easily combined with Tikal too, just across the border, and with the beaches and reef of Belize.
