Volcanoes, cloud forest and crater lakes, with a tropical twist.

8 hotels

Central America's mountains are volcanoes, cloud forests and crater lakes rather than ski slopes, and they are among the most rewarding landscapes in the Americas. A chain of volcanoes runs the length of the isthmus, from Guatemala to Costa Rica, and around them lie misty highland forests full of hummingbirds, quetzals and orchids, steaming hot springs, waterfalls and rivers of extraordinary colour, such as the sky-blue Río Celeste.

In Costa Rica, the region's pioneer of eco-tourism, lodges sit at the foot of Arenal volcano and high in the Monteverde cloud forest, while Pacuare Lodge can be reached only by raft. In Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, ringed by three volcanoes and Maya villages, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Nicaragua has an island ecolodge on Lake Nicaragua, and Belize has Francis Ford Coppola's lodge in the pine-forested Mountain Pine Ridge. These are hotels for nature lovers, adventurers and anyone who wants mountains with a tropical twist.

When to go

The dry season, from December to April, is the most popular time, with sunny days and the best conditions for hiking, volcano views and rafting; it is also the busiest and most expensive. The green season, from May to November, brings afternoon showers, lush forests, fewer visitors and lower prices, and rivers are at their best for rafting; September and October are usually the wettest months in much of the region. In the highlands of Guatemala and Monteverde, evenings are cool all year, so bring a warm layer.

How to choose your hotel

For Costa Rica's volcanoes, choose Nayara Tented Camp, with luxury tents and hot-spring plunge pools facing Arenal. For cloud forest, choose Hotel Belmar in Monteverde. For the blue river and waterfall, choose Hideaway Rio Celeste. For adventure, choose Pacuare Lodge, reached by white-water raft. In Guatemala, choose Casa Palopó for boutique luxury on Lake Atitlán, or Laguna Lodge for an eco-lodge reached only by boat. In Nicaragua, choose Jicaro Island Ecolodge, and in Belize, Blancaneaux Lodge.

FAQ

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

December to April is the dry season and the most popular time. The green season, from May to November, is quieter and cheaper, with afternoon rain and lush forest.

Is Lake Atitlán worth visiting?

Yes. Ringed by volcanoes and Maya villages, it is one of the most beautiful places in Central America and combines well with Antigua and Tikal.

Can you see volcanoes erupting in Central America?

Arenal in Costa Rica is no longer actively erupting, but it remains a striking cone. In Guatemala, Fuego near Antigua often erupts and can be seen on guided hikes.

Is it cold in the mountains of Central America?

Not cold, but cool. Monteverde and the Guatemalan highlands can be chilly in the evenings, so pack a warm layer and a rain jacket.
