Québec's mountains are older and gentler than the Rockies, but they have a beauty all of their own. North of the St. Lawrence River, the Laurentians and the hills of Charlevoix roll away in waves of maple, birch and spruce, cut by deep valleys and dotted with lakes and French-speaking villages. In winter, the snow is deep and the cold is crisp; in autumn, the forests turn spectacular shades of red and gold.
The province has two great mountain areas. In the Laurentians, about 90 minutes from Montréal, Mont-Tremblant is the best-known ski resort in eastern North America, with around 100 runs on four sides of the mountain and a car-free village of brightly painted buildings at its foot. East of Québec City, Charlevoix is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve shaped by an ancient meteorite impact, where the slopes of Le Massif, with the highest vertical in eastern Canada, seem to plunge straight into the St. Lawrence. Both combine beautifully with a few days in Montréal or the old town of Québec City.
When to go
The ski season usually runs from late November or December to April, with the snowiest, coldest weather from January to March, when temperatures often fall well below freezing. March and April bring sunny spring skiing and the maple-syrup season, when sugar shacks open across the province. Summer, from June to August, is ideal for hiking, biking, lakes and whale-watching on the St. Lawrence. Late September and early October bring the famous autumn colours, one of the most beautiful times of year to visit.
How to choose your hotel
For ski-in, ski-out convenience in Tremblant's lively village, choose Fairmont Tremblant, a 312-room château-style hotel at the foot of the slopes, with indoor and outdoor pools and a spa; it is ideal for families. For romance and peace, choose Hôtel Quintessence, a 30-suite, Michelin Key boutique hotel on the shore of Lac Tremblant, with fireplaces in every suite. For an all-inclusive ski holiday with an extraordinary view, choose Club Med Québec Charlevoix at Le Massif, with lift passes, lessons, meals and children's clubs included.
