Location: Mont-Tremblant, Québec

Mont-Tremblant rises above the forests and lakes of the Laurentians, about 130 kilometres north-west of Montréal. It is the best-known ski resort in eastern North America, with around 100 runs spread across four sides of the mountain and more than 600 metres of vertical, and at its foot lies a car-free village of brightly painted, steep-roofed buildings, cobbled lanes, restaurants and bars. Montréal–Trudeau airport is around 90 minutes away by road, and Ottawa about two hours.

The Fairmont stands at the top of the village, beside the slopes and the lifts, with views over the rooftops to Lac Tremblant and the Laurentian hills. Everything in the village, from the shops and restaurants to the free cabriolet gondola, is a short walk away, and in winter you can ski back to the hotel at the end of the day.

Rooms and suites at Fairmont Tremblant

There are 312 rooms, including 64 suites, with views over the mountain, the village or the lake. Rooms are warm and comfortable, in a classic Canadian lodge style with wood and natural tones, and many suites have fireplaces and kitchenettes, useful for families and longer stays.

Family rooms and connecting rooms are easy to arrange, and the larger suites have space for the whole family.

Facilities at Fairmont Tremblant

The Aquatic Centre has heated indoor and outdoor pools, an indoor jacuzzi and a sauna, open all year, and swimming outdoors in the snow while skiers come down the mountain is one of the highlights of a winter stay. Moment Spa Tremblant has 15 treatment rooms, including rooms for couples, and a relaxation lounge.

Dining options include Choux Gras Brasserie Culinaire, Le Comptoir and the Ricochet Café, plus the Axe Lounge Bar and a terrace for après-ski in the sun. A ski valet and ski storage make the most of the ski-in, ski-out location, and the hotel can arrange lessons, snowshoeing, dog sledding and, in summer, hiking, biking, golf and lake activities.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is the last run of a cold, bright afternoon, skiing down towards the village as the low sun lights the snow-covered roofs and the smoke rises from the chimneys, and gliding to a stop at the hotel door.

After a swim in the steaming outdoor pool, walk down through the village for dinner, perhaps with a stop for a Québec classic, poutine or maple taffy rolled in the snow.

Why Fairmont Tremblant is one of the best mountain hotels

Fairmont Tremblant earns its place because it combines a prime ski-in, ski-out position at the top of North America's most charming ski village with the comfort and facilities of a large luxury hotel. It suits families particularly well, with family rooms, kitchenette suites, pools and everything in walking distance.

For a smaller, more romantic stay by the lake, compare it with Hôtel Quintessence. For Québec's most dramatic ski views, see Club Med Québec Charlevoix, and for Fairmont in the Rockies, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

When to go to Fairmont Tremblant

The ski season usually runs from late November to April, with the coldest, snowiest weather from January to March; temperatures can drop well below freezing, so pack warm layers. March brings longer, sunnier days and sugar-shack season. Summer is lovely for hiking, biking, golf and swimming in the lakes, and late September and early October bring the famous autumn colours, when the Laurentian forests turn red and gold.
