How we choose our hotels

Every hotel on Best Mountain Hotels is chosen for one reason: we believe it offers one of the most memorable mountain stays in the world. We look at five things:

   Setting. The mountains come first. Every hotel has a remarkable location, whether that is beneath the Matterhorn, on the edge of a fjord or high in the Himalayas.

   Design and character. We favour hotels with a strong sense of place: great architecture, beautiful interiors, or genuine history and personality.

3. 3.

   Wellness. Pools, spas, saunas and hot springs that make the most of the mountain setting.

4. 4.

   The mountain experience. Easy access to skiing, hiking or the landscape that makes each place special, in winter, summer or both.

5. 5.

   Reputation. We research every hotel carefully, using official information, respected travel guides and independent guest reviews, and we only include hotels that are consistently well rated.

We include hotels at every budget, from mountain huts and family-run inns to the world's grandest palaces, because a great mountain stay does not have to be expensive. Each review is written to help you decide whether a hotel is right for you, including its drawbacks. Every review shows the date it was last updated, and we check hotels regularly for changes.
