The best mountain hotels in South & Southeast Asia
Tea-country bungalows in Sri Lanka and rice terraces above Sapa.

Asia's mountains are not only the Himalayas. In Sri Lanka, the hill country rises steeply from the tropical coast into a cool, misty world of tea estates, waterfalls and colonial bungalows, where tea pickers work the emerald slopes and a little blue train winds through the hills on one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world. Around Ella and Hatton, the views stretch across plantations to Adam's Peak, a sacred mountain climbed by pilgrims before dawn.
In northern Vietnam, near the Chinese border, the mountains around Sapa are carved into some of the most spectacular rice terraces in Asia, beneath Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina. The valleys are home to Hmong, Red Dao and other minority communities, and walking between their villages, past buffalo grazing beside the paddies, is one of the great experiences of Southeast Asia. Both regions offer something rare: mountain hotels that feel genuinely tropical, with cool air, gentle walking and a deep sense of local culture.
When to go
In Sri Lanka's hill country, the driest, clearest months are generally December to April, which is also the season for climbing Adam's Peak. The south-west monsoon from May to September brings rain to the western slopes, while Ella, on the eastern side, often stays drier in the middle of the year, so the island can be visited all year round with a little planning. Around Sapa, the best seasons are spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November. The terraces are lush and green in summer, golden at harvest time in September, and winter can be cold and misty, with occasional frost.
How to choose your hotel
For the ultimate tea-country stay, choose Ceylon Tea Trails, a collection of restored planters' bungalows on working estates above Castlereagh Lake, with butlers, pools and all meals included. For a lively, good-value base, choose 98 Acres Resort, with chalets on a tea estate above Ella, close to the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak. For Vietnam, choose Topas Ecolodge, whose bungalows sit on a ridge above the rice terraces outside Sapa, with an infinity pool and guided treks to local villages.
FAQ
Is Sri Lanka's hill country worth visiting?
Yes. The tea estates, waterfalls, cooler climate and scenic train journeys make it one of the highlights of any trip to Sri Lanka.
When are Sapa's rice terraces most beautiful?
The terraces are green from around June to August and turn golden just before the harvest in September. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for trekking.
Is Ella or Hatton better for a tea-country stay?
Ella is livelier, with cafés, easy hikes and the Nine Arch Bridge. Hatton and the Castlereagh area are quieter and more exclusive, best for a relaxing stay on a working tea estate.
Do you need to be fit to trek around Sapa?
Most village treks are moderate and can be adapted to your fitness, but paths can be steep and muddy after rain, so good shoes are essential.
