Location: Sapa, Vietnam
The lodge is in the countryside outside the mountain town of Sapa, in Lào Cai province, close to the Chinese border. The Hoang Lien Son range includes Fansipan, at 3,143 metres the highest mountain in Indochina, now reached by cable car as well as on foot, and the valleys are farmed by ethnic minority communities, whose villages, markets and colourful traditional dress are a highlight of any visit. Hanoi is around five to six hours away by road, and the lodge recommends its own transfers for the final, winding stretch; overnight trains also run from Hanoi to Lào Cai.
Around Sapa, trekking trails link villages such as Lao Chai, Ta Van and Cat Cat through the Muong Hoa valley, and the colourful Sunday market at Bac Ha is a highlight for many visitors. The O Quy Ho Pass, one of the highest mountain roads in Vietnam, offers spectacular views over the range. Many travellers combine Sapa with Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.

Bungalows at Topas Ecolodge
The bungalows are private and well designed, built from local materials, each with a balcony facing the mountains and the rice terraces. They are comfortable rather than lavish, with good beds and big views, and the setting is the real luxury.
The lodge works closely with the surrounding communities, employing local staff and guides from the nearby villages, and its sustainable design, using local materials and renewable energy, keeps its impact on the landscape low. Guests consistently praise the warmth and helpfulness of the team.
Facilities at Topas Ecolodge
The heated infinity pools, looking straight out over the valleys, are the lodge's most photographed feature, and there is a pool bar with complimentary sunset drinks. The restaurants use local ingredients, with a popular barbecue menu, and there is a spa. The lodge's knowledgeable guides lead treks through the rice terraces and villages, cycling trips and visits to local markets.

The mountain moment
The Topas moment is a late-afternoon swim in the infinity pool, as the light turns the rice terraces gold and the mist creeps up the valleys, the sound of a distant village drifting up from below.
On a clear morning, the summit of Fansipan appears above the clouds, and a trek down through the terraces to a Hmong village, where children play and buffalo graze beside the paddies, is an unforgettable introduction to the mountains of northern Vietnam.
Why Topas Ecolodge is one of the best mountain hotels
Topas earns its place for its extraordinary setting, its pools and its access to authentic trekking among the rice terraces. It is remote, the drive from Hanoi is long and bumpy, and cloud often hides the views, especially in winter. But for adventurous travellers, it is unforgettable.
For the Himalayas, see Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge in Nepal.
Plan at least two or three nights to make the long journey worthwhile and to enjoy the trekking. Bring warm layers, as the mountains are cool, especially in winter, along with good walking shoes and a rain jacket. Many travellers combine Sapa with Hanoi's old quarter, the limestone landscapes of Ninh Binh and a cruise on Ha Long Bay.
When to go to Topas Ecolodge
September and October are the classic months, when the rice terraces turn gold before the harvest and the skies are often clear. March to May brings mild weather and newly planted, water-filled terraces that mirror the sky. Summer, from June to August, is green but wet, and winter, from December to February, is cold and frequently misty, with occasional frost.
