Stone cottages on a ridge facing the Annapurna range, with a pool and a strong sustainability focus.
Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge sits on a ridge high above Nepal's Pokhara Valley, facing the great wall of the Annapurna range, with a small cluster of hand-cut stone cottages, gardens and terraces. It was opened by Sir Edmund Hillary and is run by pioneers of responsible tourism in Nepal. From its terraces and infinity pool, guests look out on the sacred peak of Machapuchare and three of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre mountains. It is one of the most peaceful and beautiful places to stay in the Himalayas.
Location: Nepal
The lodge sits on a hilltop ridge around 1,000 feet, roughly 300 metres, above the Pokhara Valley, about 10 kilometres and a 30-minute drive from the lakeside town of Pokhara in central Nepal. Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region and the starting point for some of the world's most famous treks, including the Annapurna Circuit and the trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
From Kathmandu, Pokhara is a short domestic flight or a six- to seven-hour drive. Pokhara now also has an international airport. The lodge is open from September to mid-June, closing during the monsoon months.
Rooms and suites at Tiger Mountain
There are just 18 or so rooms, housed in 13 stone cottages spread across seven acres of terraced gardens and woodland. The cottages are built of hand-cut stone and arranged to resemble a traditional Nepali hill village, and each room has its own veranda with views of the mountains or the valley.
Interiors are simple and elegant, with local furnishings, hand-knotted Tibetan wool rugs and heaters for chilly evenings. There are family rooms. Wi-Fi is available mainly in the main lodge, encouraging guests to disconnect and enjoy the view.
Facilities at Tiger Mountain
The main lodge is built around a Nepali-style courtyard, with a central fireplace, a bar, comfortable lounges, dining terraces and a library with a rare collection of books on Himalayan mountaineering. Meals combine Nepali and international cooking, from Gurkha-style eggs at breakfast to hearty dal bhat and thali at dinner, using herbs and salads from the lodge's organic garden and produce from local villages.
The secluded infinity pool, set among the gardens, reflects the snow-capped peaks in its water. Massages, including Ayurvedic treatments, yoga and guided meditation can be arranged, often in the privacy of your own cottage.
The lodge's guides are keen naturalists: more than 350 bird species and over 260 types of butterfly have been recorded in the area. Guided walks lead through local villages, forests and terraced fields, and the lodge can arrange cultural excursions, paragliding over Phewa Lake and longer treks. Its commitment to regenerative tourism includes community partnerships, careful waste management and conservation of local biodiversity.
The mountain moment
The defining moment is dawn. Early in the morning, with a cup of tea infused with herbs from the garden, guests gather on the terraces as the sun rises behind the Himalayas, and the peaks of Machapuchare, the "Fishtail", Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu turn pink, then gold. Machapuchare, considered sacred and closed to climbers, rises in a perfect pyramid almost directly in front of the lodge.
In the afternoon, a swim in the infinity pool, with the same peaks reflected on the surface, is equally magical.
Why Tiger Mountain is one of the best mountain hotels
Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge earns its place because it offers one of the finest mountain views on Earth, in a small, beautifully designed and genuinely responsible lodge. Its connection with Sir Edmund Hillary, its sustainable ethos and its warm Nepali hospitality make it far more than a place to stay.
It is simple rather than luxurious, and reaching Nepal takes effort. But for those who want to experience the Himalayas without trekking, or to recover in style after a trek, it is a perfect retreat.
When to go to Tiger Mountain
The lodge is open from September to mid-June and closes during the monsoon. Autumn, roughly October and November, is the classic season, with clear, rain-washed skies and the sharpest mountain views of the year; it is also peak trekking season, so book early. December to February brings cool, crisp mornings and usually clear views, with chilly evenings by the fire. Spring, March to May, is warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom on the surrounding hills, though haze can soften the views later in the season. September is the shoulder month as the monsoon fades, with lush green terraces and fewer visitors. Dawn is the best time to see the peaks in any season, so plan to be on the terrace early. Many guests combine a stay with a trek in the Annapurna region, using the lodge as a peaceful base before or after.
