Hotel Bella Tola, St-Luc, Switzerland

A charming Belle Époque hotel in a quiet Valais village, family-run with a small spa. Far cheaper than Zermatt or Verbier nearby.

Hotel Bella Tola in St-Luc is one of Switzerland's most charming historic hotels, set in a quiet village high above the Rhône valley and facing a skyline of 4,000-metre peaks in the Val d'Anniviers. The Bella Tola was built in 1859 and grew, over the following decades, into a classic Belle Époque mountain hotel. Since 1996 it has been owned and lovingly run by the Buchs family, who have restored it with original furniture, painted ceilings and a beautiful small spa. It offers the warmth and character of a family home, the elegance of a grand hotel, and prices well below those of nearby Zermatt or Verbier.

Location: St-Luc, Switzerland

St-Luc lies at around 1,650 metres in the Val d'Anniviers, a long, unspoilt side valley that runs south from the Rhône valley in the canton of Valais. The hotel stands at the entrance to the old village, on a south-facing terrace overlooking the mountain road, with views to the peaks at the head of the valley.

The nearest railway station is Sierre, in the Rhône valley, around half an hour away by road, with frequent trains from Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. A PostBus links Sierre with St-Luc, and the stop is right in front of the hotel. Geneva Airport is roughly two and a half hours away.

Rooms and suites at Hotel Bella Tola

The hotel's rooms and suites are each individually decorated and many furnished with original antiques. The style is romantic and old-fashioned in the best sense: painted wooden furniture, floral fabrics, soft colours and, in some rooms, painted murals. Some rooms look out towards the famous Couronne Impériale, or Kaiserkrone, the ring of great peaks at the head of the valley.

Rooms vary in size and style, from cosy doubles to larger family rooms and suites, which makes the hotel a good choice for families. Do not expect sleek modern luxury: the charm lies in history, character and comfort.

Facilities at Hotel Bella Tola

The public rooms are a delight. The salons are filled with period furniture, and the dining room features painted ceilings dating back to the nineteenth century. Dinners are served in this elegant setting, with a focus on Valais specialities and regional produce, from raclette and local cheeses to Valais wines from the vineyards just down the valley.

The spa, added in 2004, is small but beautiful, with an indoor pool, sauna, hammam, ice fountain and alpine-style massage rooms offering treatments such as the Anniviers Ritual. It is the perfect place to relax after a day of skiing or hiking. The hotel is also a Swiss Bike Hotel, with facilities for cyclists.

St-Luc shares a ski area with neighbouring Chandolin, offering uncrowded slopes for all levels with spectacular views. In summer, the area is a hiker's paradise, with trails leading high into the mountains. A funicular from the village climbs to Tignousa, where a famous Planet Walk follows a scale model of the solar system across the mountainside, and the François-Xavier Bagnoud Observatory offers stargazing evenings.

The mountain moment

The defining view from St-Luc is the Couronne Impériale: a ring of some of the highest and most beautiful peaks in the Alps, including the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Ober Gabelhorn and Dent Blanche, with the Matterhorn peeping in at the edge. On a clear morning, sitting on the hotel's terrace with coffee as the sun lights the snow on these giants, is a moment to savour.

At night, St-Luc offers something else: some of the darkest, clearest skies in Switzerland. Walking the Planet Walk at dusk, or spending an evening at the observatory gazing at the stars and planets, is unforgettable.

Why Hotel Bella Tola is one of the best mountain hotels

The Bella Tola earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers genuine history, warmth and beauty at a fraction of the price of the big-name resorts nearby. It was named Swiss Historic Hotel of the Year in 2001, and its family owners bring a personal touch that few hotels can match.

It is a quiet, traditional place, perfect for families, couples and those who love hiking, skiing without the crowds, good food and Belle Époque charm. For an authentic taste of the Swiss Alps, it is a gem.

When to go to Hotel Bella Tola

The Bella Tola is a seasonal hotel, so check its winter and summer opening dates before you plan. Winter brings quiet, uncrowded skiing on the shared St-Luc and Chandolin slopes, with sledging and snowshoeing for families. Summer is arguably the finest time to come, with long hikes in the Val d'Anniviers, the Planet Walk above the village and mild evenings on the terrace. Late summer and early autumn bring clear skies and excellent stargazing at the observatory. Families should book the larger rooms early for the school holidays, when the hotel is at its busiest.
