The Capra, Saas-Fee, Switzerland

An intimate five-star Alpine lodge in car-free Saas-Fee, pairing chalet character with Peak Health Spa and Swiss-Italian mountain cooking at Brasserie 1809.

The Capra is a five-star-superior boutique hotel in Saas-Fee, the "Pearl of the Alps": a car-free village of dark timber chalets at the head of a valley, encircled by glaciers and thirteen peaks over 4,000 metres. Standing in the upper part of the village, it has just 38 rooms and suites. Named after the Latin word for goat, the agile master of the high mountains, it combines chalet warmth with understated modern luxury, a 1,000-square-metre spa built around the latest health science and a brasserie celebrating Valais produce.

Location: Saas-Fee, Switzerland

Saas-Fee sits at around 1,800 metres in the Saas Valley of the canton of Valais, in southern Switzerland, close to the Italian border. The village is car-free; visitors leave their cars in a car park at the entrance, and electric taxis carry guests and luggage to their hotels. The Capra is in the upper part of the village, close to the lifts and with views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

The nearest railway station is Visp, around 45 minutes away by PostBus, with fast trains from Zurich, Bern, Geneva and Milan. Zermatt lies on the other side of the Mischabel range, the great wall of peaks that towers over Saas-Fee, including the Dom, the highest mountain entirely within Switzerland.

Rooms and suites at The Capra

The 38 rooms and suites are inspired by the colours of nature and the traditional Alpine character of the region, with walls of beautifully grooved wood, local materials and modern design creating a warm, intimate atmosphere. It feels more like a private retreat than a hotel.

As well as elegant double rooms, there are Signature Suites of around 45 square metres, Deluxe Suites of 55 square metres and three spacious Penthouse Suites of 75 to 100 square metres, each with its own fireplace in the living room. Many rooms have balconies with views of the glaciers and peaks.

Facilities at The Capra

The Peak Health Spa covers more than 1,000 square metres and is based on the latest scientific insights into health and wellbeing. It includes an indoor pool, an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, saunas, a relaxation room with an open fire, a fitness studio and treatment rooms offering facials, energetic massages, foot hydrotherapy and active salt therapies. Guests can also book Peak Health Retreats, tailored programmes designed to help integrate holistic health approaches into everyday life, and The Capra Private Spa can be hired exclusively.

Brasserie 1809, with an adjoining lounge, serves reinterpreted Alpine cuisine with sustainably grown, seasonal ingredients from the region, from Valais cheeses and air-dried meats to mountain herbs and local wines. There is also a bar with a fireside lounge, childcare is available, and the hotel is bike-friendly in summer.

The mountain moment

The defining Saas-Fee experience is riding the Alpin Express and then the Metro Alpin, the world's highest underground funicular, to Mittelallalin at around 3,500 metres, where the revolving restaurant offers a 360-degree panorama of glaciers and 4,000-metre peaks. Thanks to its glacier, Saas-Fee offers some of the longest ski seasons in the Alps, and in summer it is a training ground for national ski teams.

Back at The Capra, the perfect end to the day is a soak in the outdoor hydrotherapy pool, watching the glaciers glow pink in the last light, before dinner at Brasserie 1809.

Why The Capra is one of the best mountain hotels

The Capra earns its place because it offers a rare combination of intimacy, refined chalet style and a genuinely innovative approach to wellness, in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt villages in the Alps. Its small size means personal service and a peaceful atmosphere, while Saas-Fee's car-free streets and dramatic glacier setting make it feel truly removed from everyday life.

It is less glamorous than Zermatt or St. Moritz, and that is part of the appeal. For couples and families seeking a stylish, restorative mountain escape, it is a hidden gem.

When to go to The Capra

Saas-Fee's glacier gives it one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps, typically from late autumn into spring, with high-altitude skiing continuing into summer for training teams. December to February brings the snowiest days and the most atmospheric village evenings, with Christmas, New Year and February holidays the busiest weeks. March and April offer long, sunny days and reliable snow at altitude. Summer, roughly June to September, is superb for hiking, glacier walks and mountain biking, with the village quieter and greener. With only 38 rooms, book early for peak weeks, and enquire about Peak Health Retreats if you want a structured wellness stay.
