There is no better start to a ski day than clicking into your skis at the hotel door. No ski bus, no boot-carrying walk to the lift, no queue for a shuttle: just a short glide onto the piste, and at the end of the day a run that finishes at the hotel terrace.
True ski-in ski-out hotels are rarer than the marketing suggests, so every hotel below has been checked for genuine slope access. We have included the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps and the Dolomites, which form the southern edge of the Alpine chain. At the end there are also a few hotels that are close to the lifts without being truly ski-in ski-out.
1. Cheval Blanc Courchevel, France
Best for: ultimate luxury, food lovers, families
Cheval Blanc Courchevel is the benchmark ski-in ski-out hotel in Courchevel 1850, with direct access to the Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. There are just 36 rooms and suites, a Guerlain spa and Le 1947 à Cheval Blanc, Yannick Alléno's restaurant and the only one in Courchevel with three Michelin stars.
The service is famously thorough. Your boots are warmed and your skis prepared before you step out, and in the late afternoon you ski straight back to the terrace in the sun.
2. Le Chabichou, Courchevel, France
Best for: gastronomy, returning guests, families
Also in Courchevel 1850, Le Chabichou is a ski-in ski-out institution whose white wooden façade is instantly recognisable from the slopes. It began as a nine-room Savoyard chalet bought by Michel and Maryse Rochedy in 1963. Michel won Courchevel's first-ever Michelin star in 1979.
Today the gastronomic restaurant is led by Stéphane Buron, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France. There is an on-site ski shop, and a spa with a salt cave and plunge pool for after a day in the Trois Vallées. It offers the same slopes as the grander palaces, with more of a family feel.
3. Les Barmes de l'Ours, Val d'Isère, France
Best for: serious skiers, families, snow-sure holidays
Les Barmes de l'Ours sits at the foot of La Face de Bellevarde, the black run that hosted the men's downhill at the 1992 Olympics, in one of the most snow-sure resorts in the Alps. You can ski La Face and glide straight back to the door.
The hotel has four floors of themed rooms, an 800-square-metre wellness area with an indoor pool and hammam, and La Table de l'Ours, a Michelin-starred restaurant. It is a polished, ski-focused base for the whole Espace Killy.
4. Riffelalp Resort 2222m, Zermatt, Switzerland
Best for: couples, Matterhorn views, car-free calm
Riffelalp Resort 2222m stands on a sunny plateau 2,222 metres above Zermatt. You reach it on the Gornergrat railway and then Europe's highest tram. In winter it is ski-in ski-out to the Gornergrat slopes and Zermatt's huge ski network.
Its spa is the highest in Europe. The heated outdoor pool faces the Matterhorn, and after the day visitors leave, you can watch the mountain turn pink at sunset almost on your own. January and February bring the most atmospheric snow, and March brings long, sunny ski days.
5. Tschuggen Grand Hotel, Arosa, Switzerland
Best for: design lovers, spa lovers, families
The Tschuggen Grand Hotel has a ski connection no other hotel in Switzerland can match. The Tschuggen Express is the country's only private hotel mountain railway, and it carries guests from the hotel into the heart of the Arosa Lenzerheide ski area in under four minutes. It brings you back to the door at the end of the day.
Back at the hotel is the Tschuggen Bergoase, a 5,000-square-metre spa by Mario Botta whose glass "sails" glow among the trees at dusk. There is also two-Michelin-star dining.
6. Schlosshotel Fiss, Tyrol, Austria
Best for: families with children of all ages
For a family ski holiday, Schlosshotel Fiss is hard to beat. It has direct, private ski-in ski-out access to the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis area, one of Austria's best family ski regions. The children head to ski school, the parents take the private lift onto the slopes, and everyone skis back to the door in the afternoon.
There are 135 individually designed rooms and a 5,000-square-metre spa split into adult and family areas. The Aqua Monte water world even has a 48-metre loop slide.
7. Jagdgut Wachtelhof, Hinterthal, Austria
Best for: couples, traditional Alpine style, a quieter ski week
Jagdgut Wachtelhof is a former hunting estate in Austria's Salzburger Land, restored by the Hütter family with the designer Michele Bönan. It has just 17 rooms, full of dark wood, fur throws and antiques, and it was Gault&Millau's Austrian Hotel of the Year in 2016.
It is ski-in ski-out, with a ski room and boot warmers. The Königstour ski circuit links the villages of the Hochkönig region. At dusk, watch the limestone walls of the Hochkönig glow pink from the heated outdoor pool.
8. FORESTIS, Dolomites, Italy
Best for: wellness, design, couples
FORESTIS is a design-led spa hotel high on the Plose mountain above Brixen in South Tyrol. Three slender timber towers rise from the forest beside a historic early-twentieth-century building. In winter it is ski-in ski-out to the Plose ski area, which has around 40 kilometres of slopes.
This is the calmest hotel on the list. It has a 2,000-square-metre spa based on four native trees, forest cuisine, and Dolomites sunsets that turn the peaks pink, orange and deep red.
9. Hotel Chalet del Sogno, Madonna di Campiglio, Italy
Best for: skiers, couples, Italian food
Hotel Chalet del Sogno is an intimate, family-run five-star chalet with just 18 rooms in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy's most searched ski resort. That matters here, because many of the resort's hotels are in the town centre and rely on shuttles. At Chalet del Sogno you step onto the slopes from the door, and the centre is still only about five minutes' walk away.
Book for the 3Tre night slalom, when the floodlit Canalone Miramonti fills with spectators. Dinner at Due Pini, the restaurant attached to the hotel, serves Trentino cooking.
Close to the lifts, but not ski-in ski-out
These hotels are some of our favourites in the Alps. They are a short walk from the lifts rather than on the piste.
- Hotel Gasthof Post, Lech: the lifts, ski school and the legendary Weisse Ring circuit are a short walk away.
- Hotel La Perla, Corvara: close to the lifts in Alta Badia, and an ideal base for the Sellaronda.
- The Capra, Saas-Fee: in the upper part of the village, close to the lifts and facing the glaciers.
- Badrutt's Palace, St. Moritz: a short walk to the funicular up to Corviglia.
How to choose a ski-in ski-out hotel in the Alps
- Ask what "ski-in ski-out" means at that hotel. Some hotels use the phrase for a lift ten minutes' walk away. The hotels above have genuine slope access, but conditions at the bottom of a run can vary with the snow, especially early and late in the season.
- Check the ski area as well as the hotel. The Trois Vallées and Espace Killy suit strong skiers who want mileage. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and the Plose are gentler and calmer.
- Book early for February. School holidays across Europe fill the best rooms first. January is often quieter, and March has the most sunshine.
