Schlosshotel Fiss, Tyrol, Austria

A five-star family and spa hotel above Fiss, with direct slope access in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, extensive pools and separate adult and family wellness spaces.

Schlosshotel Fiss is one of the best family ski hotels in Austria, standing high above the rooftops of the Tyrolean village of Fiss, where a hunting lodge opened in 1940. In 1991 it was bought by Bernadette Domenig, who wanted, in her words, to create a special place in a special location. Today, run by her daughter Simone, it is a five-star family and spa hotel with 135 individually designed rooms, a vast spa, superb children's facilities and something very rare: direct, private ski-in, ski-out access to one of Austria's best family ski areas.

Location: Tyrol, Austria

The hotel stands at around 1,436 metres directly on the slopes of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, a sun-drenched high plateau above the Upper Inn Valley in western Tyrol. The region is renowned for its family-friendliness, sunshine and snow-sure skiing, with around 214 kilometres of pistes for every level, as well as extensive children's ski schools.

Innsbruck is around an hour away by car, and Munich and Zurich are both within easy reach. The nearest railway station is Landeck-Zams. The hotel is open in winter and summer, with its winter season typically running from early December to mid-April.

Rooms and suites at Schlosshotel Fiss

The 135 rooms and suites are individually designed by Simone Domenig, combining Alpine cosiness with modern style: warm wood, stone, leather and luxurious fabrics, with open fires and divan beds in some. Many have balconies with mountain views.

Families are well catered for, with spacious family suites, separate children's rooms and interconnecting options. The newer two-bedroom Panorama Suites have private terraces with sweeping mountain views, ideal for families wanting extra space.

Facilities at Schlosshotel Fiss

The SHF Spa covers around 5,000 square metres, cleverly divided so that families and adults each have their own spaces. The Adults Spa, for guests aged 15 and over, has a variety of saunas, steam rooms, an infrared cabin and relaxation areas. The Family Spa offers saunas and steam baths for all ages. The Aqua Monte & Splash water world has indoor and outdoor pools, Jacuzzis and a 48-metre loop slide. There are 14 beauty and treatment rooms, including a private spa suite and hammam.

Dining is award-winning, with a focus on regional and seasonal ingredients. The all-day Lounge Bar is the heart of the hotel, and there is a Beef Club, an exclusive Chef's Table and an excellent wine cellar, including the hotel's own red wine cuvée.

For children, there are daily supervised activities from the age of two, a teens' media room, a children's ski lift on site and countless activities. A private lift links the hotel directly to the slopes, and there is an in-house ski rental shop.

The mountain moment

The defining moment at Schlosshotel Fiss is the ease of a family ski day. Children head off to ski school, parents take the private lift straight onto the slopes and explore the vast, sunny ski area with views across the Inn Valley to the peaks of the Ötztal and Kaunertal glaciers. Everyone skis back to the hotel's door in the afternoon, and the whole family meets again in the spa or the pools.

In summer, the plateau becomes a playground of hiking and biking trails, adventure parks, mountain coasters and ropes courses, with mountain lakes and huts all around.

Why Schlosshotel Fiss is one of the best mountain hotels

Schlosshotel Fiss earns its place as one of the very best family ski hotels in the Alps. Its ski-in, ski-out location, enormous spa, outstanding children's facilities and family warmth make it a dream for families, while separate adults-only spaces ensure parents can also relax.

It is a busy, lively family hotel, so couples without children may prefer something quieter. But for families who want five-star luxury, great skiing and happy children, few hotels do it better.

When to go to Schlosshotel Fiss

The winter season typically runs from early December to mid-April. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is known for sunshine and snow-sure skiing, and January is often the quietest and best-value time to come. School holiday weeks, particularly Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter, are the busiest of the year, so families should book family suites as early as possible. March brings long, sunny days that are ideal for younger skiers. In summer, the plateau becomes a family playground of hiking, biking, adventure parks and mountain coasters, with the pools and water world just as popular as in winter. The hotel closes between seasons, so check dates for late spring and autumn. Children's activities run daily from the age of two, so even the youngest guests are well catered for.
