Great mountain views do not have to come with palace-hotel prices. Some of the most memorable places we have stayed are small family-run hotels, historic inns, mountain huts and farmhouse guesthouses, where a night can cost less than dinner at a grand hotel down the valley.
Every hotel below is in our Affordable stays collection, and each one typically has rooms under $250 a night outside the peak weeks. Rates change with the season and the exchange rate, so always check the price for your dates. Generally, shoulder seasons (late spring and autumn) and weeknights offer the best value.

How to find a mountain hotel under $250
- Travel in the shoulder seasons. In the Alps and Dolomites, June and September are often cheaper than July and August and less crowded. Ski resorts are cheapest in January outside the holidays and in late March.
- Stay one valley over. Hotels near famous resorts, rather than in them, often cost far less. Lake Bled instead of Lake Como, Monachil instead of the ski station, or Vielha instead of a hotel on the slopes at Baqueira.
- Look at mountain huts and guesthouses. Rifugi in the Dolomites and minshuku in Japan usually include dinner and breakfast, which makes them better value than the nightly price suggests.
- Check weeknight prices. City-adjacent mountain towns such as Nikko, Gatlinburg and Chamonix are often much cheaper from Sunday to Thursday.
More affordable picks in our collection include Berghotel Schatzalp above Davos, Heritage Hotel Hallstatt, Rifugio Auronzo at Tre Cime and Reine Rorbuer in Lofoten. Check their rates for your dates, because they climb above $250 in peak season.
