Location: Lake Bled, Julian Alps, Slovenia
The hotel stands above the western shore of Lake Bled, close to the Bled Jezero railway station and above the lake's rowing centre, about a mile from the town centre along the lakeside path. Ljubljana's international airport is around half an hour away by road, and the capital, Ljubljana, about 45 minutes.
Bled lies at the edge of Triglav National Park, named after Slovenia's highest mountain, Mount Triglav, at 2,864 metres. The park's wild valleys, lakes and gorges, including Lake Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge, are within easy reach.
Lake Bled is small, about two kilometres long, and a walk around the whole lake takes around an hour and a half, passing beaches, swimming spots, cafés and viewpoints. Bled Castle, perched on a cliff above the water, is said to be the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in the early eleventh century, and its terraces offer superb views over the lake.
Rooms and suites at Hotel Triglav
The hotel is small and intimate, with rooms and suites that combine historic character with modern comforts, including air conditioning. All rooms face the lake, and the views across the water to the island and the castle are the main attraction.
Interiors are warm and elegant, with a mix of contemporary design and period details, and the atmosphere is calm and personal, in contrast to the larger hotels in the town centre. Rates are moderate, generally well within an affordable budget outside peak summer weeks.
The hotel's history adds to its character. First opened in 1906, it was extensively renovated and reopened in 2009, keeping its historic charm while adding modern comforts throughout. The location above the rowing centre means you may wake to see rowers training on the lake below, a reminder that Bled is one of the great rowing venues of Europe.
Facilities at Hotel Triglav
Food and wine are a highlight. The hotel's restaurant, named 1906 after the year the hotel first opened, serves modern Slovenian cuisine with local ingredients, and there is a wine cellar showcasing Slovenian wines, a piano bar and a lounge with a fireplace. The hotel also offers Slovenian culinary workshops for guests who want to learn more.
There is a small spa, and the terrace, with its views over the lake, is the perfect place for breakfast or an evening drink. A free shuttle runs to the town centre, though the walk along the lake is a pleasure in itself.
Beyond the lake, the hotel is a great base for exploring Slovenia's mountains. Lake Bohinj, larger and wilder than Bled, lies within Triglav National Park about half an hour away, and the Vintgar Gorge, with its wooden walkways above a rushing river, is a short drive. Ljubljana, one of Europe's most charming small capitals, makes an easy day trip.
The mountain moment
The defining Bled experience is a trip to the island. Board a pletna, the traditional wooden boat rowed by a standing oarsman, and glide across the lake to the island, then climb the 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption and ring the famous wishing bell. Afterwards, return to the shore for a slice of kremšnita, Bled's celebrated cream cake.
At sunrise, walk to the viewpoint at Ojstrica or Osojnica, above the lake, for the classic postcard view of the island, the castle and the Julian Alps rising behind, often with mist floating on the water.
Why Hotel Triglav is one of the best mountain hotels
Hotel Triglav earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers a stylish, historic and intimate stay at one of Europe's most beautiful mountain lakes, at a fair price. It is not in the town centre, and rooms are compact. But its views, its food and its warm atmosphere make it one of the most appealing places to stay in Bled, and a superb base for exploring the Julian Alps.
When to go to Hotel Triglav
Summer, from June to September, is the busiest season, ideal for swimming, rowing and hiking, and prices are at their highest, especially in July and August. Spring and autumn bring milder weather, fewer crowds and lower rates, with autumn colours around the lake in October. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with snow on the castle and the Julian Alps, festive markets and nearby skiing; rates are lowest in winter.
