Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs, Ouray, Colorado, USA

Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs is a small, friendly lodge in Ouray, the little Victorian mining town in south-west Colorado known as the Switzerland of America. Its great secret lies behind the building: four redwood hot spring tubs, terraced up the mountainside, filled with natural mineral water and reserved for guests alone. Soaking in them under the stars, with the jagged San Juan Mountains rising all around, is one of the great simple pleasures of the Colorado Rockies.

Location: Ouray, Colorado, USA

The lodge stands on the southern edge of Ouray, at around 2,350 metres, in a narrow valley enclosed on three sides by the steep peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Ouray's main street, lined with Victorian brick buildings, saloons, galleries and shops, is a short walk away. Montrose Regional Airport is about an hour's drive to the north, and Telluride around an hour and a half by road.

A short walk from the lodge, Box Canyon Park leads into a dramatic slot canyon, where a waterfall thunders through a narrow cleft in the rock. Ouray is also the start of the Million Dollar Highway, one of the most spectacular mountain roads in America, which climbs over Red Mountain Pass to the old mining town of Silverton.

Ouray grew up in the 1870s as a silver and gold mining town, and its well-preserved Victorian centre, with its historic hotels, opera house and brick storefronts, is listed as a historic district. The town's natural hot springs, used for centuries by the Ute people, have drawn visitors for more than a century.

Rooms and suites at Box Canyon Lodge

Rooms are simple and comfortable, in a classic mountain-lodge style, with options ranging from standard rooms to a honeymoon suite and an apartment for families or groups. Many have views of the surrounding mountains, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

This is not a luxury hotel, but the rooms are clean, warm and practical, and the real attraction is the hot springs. Rates are moderate, often within an affordable budget outside peak summer weekends and holidays.

The lodge is run in a friendly, unpretentious way, and many guests return year after year for the tubs and the town. Book early for summer weekends and the ice-climbing festival in January, when Ouray fills with climbers from around the world.

Facilities at Box Canyon Lodge

The four redwood soaking tubs, made from repurposed vintage barrels, are terraced up the hillside behind the lodge and reached by a flight of stairs. Each has submerged wooden benches and bubble jets, and the natural mineral water, with no chemicals added, ranges from around 39 to 42 degrees Celsius in the warmer tubs. They are open daily from early morning to late evening, exclusively for lodge guests.

Beyond the lodge, Ouray offers the large public Ouray Hot Springs Pool, restaurants and breweries in town, jeep tours on old mining roads and, in winter, the Ouray Ice Park, one of the most famous ice-climbing venues in the world, in the Uncompahgre Gorge nearby.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is a late-night soak in the highest tub, steam rising into the cold air, the town's lights glowing below and the dark silhouettes of the San Juans rising against a sky crowded with stars. In winter, with snow on the barrels and the peaks, it is pure magic.

By day, drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton, past old mines, waterfalls and sheer drops, or take a jeep tour into the high basins above town, where summer wildflowers carpet the slopes.

Why Box Canyon Lodge is one of the best mountain hotels

Box Canyon Lodge earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers something rare: private, natural hot springs with mountain views, in one of the most beautiful small towns in Colorado, at a fair price. The rooms are simple, and the lodge is small. But the hot springs, the setting and the town make it one of the most memorable affordable stays in the Rockies.

It also pairs well with Dunton Hot Springs, our luxury hot-springs pick in the San Juans, for a road trip through south-west Colorado that combines mountains, mining history and hot water.

When to go to Box Canyon Lodge

Ouray is lovely year-round. Summer, from June to September, brings hiking, jeep tours and wildflowers, and the busiest weekends. Autumn, in late September and early October, brings golden aspens across the San Juans, one of the finest fall-colour displays in Colorado. Winter, from December to March, brings ice climbing at the Ouray Ice Park, snowy peaks and the most atmospheric soaks. Spring is quieter, as snow melts in the high country.
