Location: Monachil, Granada, Spain
The hotel lies in Monachil, a village in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, about eight kilometres from central Granada and around 18 kilometres from the Sierra Nevada ski resort at Pradollano. Granada's airport is around half an hour away, and Málaga roughly an hour and a half to two hours by road.
Granada, with the Alhambra, the Albaicín and the Generalife gardens, is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, and the Sierra Nevada rises dramatically behind it, its snowy peaks visible from the city's terraces for much of the year. Monachil is also known for Los Cahorros, a narrow river gorge with hanging footbridges, a short walk from the village.
The Sierra Nevada is a remarkable mountain range: within a short drive, you can go from the semi-tropical coast of the Costa Tropical, where avocados and mangoes grow, to snowfields above 3,000 metres, passing through the white villages of the Alpujarra on the southern slopes, among the most beautiful in Andalucía.
Rooms and suites at La Almunia del Valle
The 15 rooms are divided between Standard rooms, Large Standard rooms with terraces and Superior rooms with terraces, decorated in a warm, rustic style that suits the historic estate. Many look out over the gardens and the valley, and the terraces are lovely for breakfast or an evening drink.
The hotel is run by its owners, which gives it a personal, welcoming atmosphere. Children are welcome, with extra beds for younger children, and pets are allowed.
Facilities at La Almunia del Valle
The hotel has a swimming pool and garden, a lounge with a fireplace and library, a bar and a restaurant serving local cuisine, with outdoor dining in warmer months. A daily set dinner can be booked in advance, and the restaurant is closed on Sundays. Massages can be arranged on request, and bikes can be hired for exploring the valley.
Rates are among the most affordable in our collection, from around €115 a night in low season, making it a superb value base for Granada and the Sierra Nevada.
The hotel's eco-friendly approach has been recognised by sustainable travel networks, and its setting, surrounded by olive groves, orchards and hills, makes it a peaceful retreat after the bustle of Granada, with birdsong in the mornings and starry skies at night.
The mountain moment
The defining moment is a day that combines mountain and city: ski the sunny slopes of the Sierra Nevada in the morning, with views on clear days towards the Mediterranean, then drive down to Granada for an afternoon at the Alhambra, before returning to La Almunia del Valle for dinner as the stars come out over the hills.
In summer, the Sierra Nevada offers superb hiking, including routes to Mulhacén, at 3,479 metres the highest peak in mainland Spain, and Monachil's Los Cahorros gorge makes a memorable half-day walk.
Why La Almunia del Valle is one of the best mountain hotels
La Almunia del Valle earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers a charming, peaceful and characterful base between Granada and the Sierra Nevada, at an excellent price. It is a rural boutique hotel rather than a ski hotel, and you will need a car. But for couples and families who want to combine the mountains, the Alhambra and the food of Andalucía, it is a delightful choice.
It also pairs naturally with El Lodge, our luxury ski-in, ski-out pick in the Sierra Nevada, offering a very different, more affordable way to experience the same extraordinary combination of mountains and Moorish history.
When to go to La Almunia del Valle
The hotel is a year-round destination. Winter, from December to April, brings skiing in the Sierra Nevada, often with strong sunshine, and quiet days in Granada. Spring is perhaps the loveliest season, with blossom in the valley, snow still on the peaks and mild weather in the city. Summer is hot in Granada but cooler in the hills, and ideal for high-mountain hiking. Autumn brings golden light and fewer visitors.
