Location: Jaca, Aragon, Spain
The hotel lies in a small, quiet village a few minutes from the centre of Jaca, in the province of Huesca, at the foot of the central Pyrenees. Jaca, with its sixteenth-century citadel and Romanesque cathedral, is the main town of the Jacetania region and a stop on the Camino de Santiago. Pamplona Airport is around 110 kilometres away, and Zaragoza about an hour and a half by road.
The ski resort of Astún is around 36 kilometres away, with Candanchú close by, and the Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, built beneath a great overhanging rock, is about 26 kilometres. The Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, one of the most spectacular in Spain, is within easy reach.
The Aragonese Pyrenees are among the least crowded mountains in Western Europe, with deep valleys, medieval villages and dramatic limestone peaks. Jaca is an excellent base for exploring them, with easy access to the Canfranc valley, the Tena valley and the Sobrarbe, as well as the spectacular Canfranc international railway station, a vast, restored early twentieth-century building near the French border.
Rooms and suites at Barosse
The hotel is small and intimate, with rooms that are adults-only and decorated in a tasteful, cosy style, with private bathrooms and garden views. Separate family apartments are also available for those travelling with children.
The small number of rooms means a quiet, personal atmosphere, and guests often praise the warmth of the hosts and the attention to detail throughout.
The hotel's small size and adults-only policy create a calm, intimate atmosphere, ideal for couples, and the hosts' local knowledge is invaluable for planning walks, drives and restaurant visits.
Facilities at Barosse
The guest lounge, with a library and an honesty bar, is a lovely place to relax in the evening, and there is a sun terrace and garden. The hotel has a sauna and offers massage treatments, ideal after a day of walking or skiing.
Food is a highlight, with breakfasts, including à la carte options, and dinners highly praised by guests, often featuring local Aragonese produce. Rates are moderate, making it an affordable option for a romantic mountain break.
Jaca, a few minutes away, has plenty of tapas bars and restaurants serving Aragonese dishes, such as roast lamb, migas and local cheeses, as well as wines from the nearby Somontano region, so there is plenty to explore in the evenings.
The mountain moment
The defining moment is a day in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, walking the classic trail along the Ordesa canyon, beneath towering limestone walls, past waterfalls to the Cola de Caballo, the horse's tail falls, at the head of the valley. It is one of the great walks of the Pyrenees.
Closer to the hotel, the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, tucked beneath a vast overhanging rock, and the views from the Peña Oroel above Jaca, are unforgettable.
Why Barosse is one of the best mountain hotels
Hotel Barosse earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers a charming, adults-only retreat in the Aragonese Pyrenees at a fair price, with excellent food and a warm welcome. It is small and simple compared with luxury mountain hotels, and you will need a car to explore. But for couples looking for peace, good food and access to some of the finest landscapes in Spain, it is a hidden gem.
It also introduces a lesser-known side of the Pyrenees to our collection: the Aragonese valleys, with their monasteries, medieval villages and dramatic canyons, are far quieter than the Alps, yet every bit as beautiful.
When to go to Barosse
The hotel is a year-round destination. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking, with mild weather, wildflowers in spring and golden beech forests in autumn. Summer is warm and busy, perfect for the high mountains and national park, where access to Ordesa may be by shuttle bus in peak months. Winter brings skiing at Astún and Candanchú, and quiet, cosy evenings. Book ahead, as the hotel is small.
