Location: Baqueira-Beret, Val d'Aran, Spain

The hotel stands at Baqueira 1500, at around 1,500 metres, in the Val d'Aran, a high valley on the northern, Atlantic-facing side of the Pyrenees in Catalonia. A ski lift is under 50 metres from the door. Toulouse is around two hours away by road, and Barcelona roughly four hours.

Baqueira-Beret is the largest ski area in Spain, with more than 160 kilometres of pistes spread across several valleys, and the Val d'Aran's position means it receives more snow than most Spanish resorts. The valley has its own language, Aranese, a form of Occitan, along with Romanesque churches and stone villages.

Baqueira-Beret opened in the 1960s and has grown into a sophisticated resort, with modern lifts, excellent grooming and a reputation for good snow, as well as some of the best restaurants in the Spanish mountains. The resort's long, varied runs suit skiers of all levels, and its off-piste terrain is among the best in the Pyrenees.

The hotel has around 120 rooms and suites, most of them Deluxe rooms with mountain views, hydromassage showers and individual climate control. Suites and junior suites have two separate living areas, making them ideal for families. The style combines modern facilities with traditional design touches, in warm wood and stone.

Interiors combine warm woods, stone and soft textiles with modern comforts, and the hotel's design draws on the traditional architecture of the Val d'Aran, with slate roofs and timber balconies. Families will find connecting rooms and larger suites with separate living areas.

Facilities at Val de Neu

Dining is varied. El Bosque serves traditional cuisine with a notable wine list, La Fondue offers fondue and raclette in an informal mountain setting, and El Bistro serves light meals. The Champagne Terrace by Louis Roederer, with an igloo-style bar serving oysters and caviar, is the glamorous heart of après-ski, and there is also a fireside lounge.

The spa uses Sisley products and includes an indoor pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi, perfect after a day on the slopes. For families, there is a kids' club with soft play, a children's pool and a children's restaurant with a supervised buffet, so parents can enjoy a quiet dinner.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is a bluebird day at Baqueira-Beret, skiing the long, open runs of Beret or the steeper slopes of Bonaigua, with views across the snow-covered peaks of the Pyrenees, then gliding back to the hotel's door for a glass of champagne on the terrace in the afternoon sun.

In summer, the Val d'Aran becomes a green paradise of hiking trails, rivers and lakes, and the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, with its glacial lakes and granite peaks, is a short drive across the Bonaigua pass.

Why Val de Neu is one of the best mountain hotels

Hotel Val de Neu earns its place as the leading luxury ski hotel in the Spanish Pyrenees, combining ski-in, ski-out convenience, excellent dining and outstanding family facilities. It is expensive, and Baqueira's après-ski scene is more refined than wild. But for families and skiers seeking Alpine-standard luxury in the Pyrenees, with Spanish style and food, it is unbeatable.

It also pairs naturally with Parador de Vielha, also in our collection, a short drive down the valley: one a five-star ski hotel at the foot of the slopes, the other a great-value base above the capital of the Val d'Aran.
