Torre del Remei, Cerdanya, Catalonia, Spain

A restored 1910 modernist mansion in La Cerdanya, pairing contemporary interiors with Catalan gastronomy and gardens of century-old sequoias.

Torre del Remei is a luxury hotel in the Catalan Pyrenees, rising from three hectares of gardens on a sunny plateau in La Cerdanya, and it looks like something from a fairytale: a 1910 modernist mansion topped with turrets, wrought-iron balconies and ornate stonework, commissioned by a Barcelona banker and designed in the spirit of Gaudí's Catalan modernisme. For decades it has been one of the most romantic hotels in Spain, and after a recent restoration it now combines its historic grandeur with contemporary interiors, refined Catalan cooking and views of the mountains all around. It currently trades as Serras Torre del Remei, so check the name when booking.

Location: Cerdanya, Catalonia, Spain

The hotel stands on the outskirts of Bolvir, a small village in La Cerdanya, a wide, high valley at around 1,100 metres in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. La Cerdanya is famous for its sunshine, its open, green landscapes and the ring of peaks that surrounds it, including the Cadí range, part of the Cadí-Moixéro Natural Park. The French border and Andorra are both close by.

The ski resorts of La Molina and Masella are around half an hour's drive away, and several golf courses, including the Real Club de Golf de Cerdanya, are nearby. Barcelona and its airport are around two hours by road; the small Andorra-La Seu d'Urgell airport is about an hour away.

Rooms and suites at Torre del Remei

There are just 24 rooms and suites, divided between the 1910 palace and an adjoining traditional Catalan farmhouse, once the stables. Rooms have been carefully renovated to keep original features, from carved ceilings to Juliet balconies, while adding contemporary design and modern comforts. Some are double-height beneath timbered ceilings; others are tucked under the eaves.

Categories include Deluxe rooms of around 35 square metres, Junior Suites of around 57 square metres, Junior Suites with terraces and grand suites, with the best looking out over the gardens, the pool and the mountains. The hotel is pet-friendly and welcomes families.

Facilities at Torre del Remei

Food is a strength. The hotel's restaurant transforms ingredients from the Cerdanya valley and the wider territory into refined, contemporary Catalan dishes, with a terrace overlooking the gardens in summer and an excellent wine list. There is also a botanical-themed bar.

The three-hectare gardens, with mature trees, lawns and an outdoor swimming pool, are a joy in summer, and there is a spa offering treatments, a fitness area and a sauna. The hotel can arrange hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, golf, skiing and hot-air balloon flights over the valley.

The mountain moment

The defining Cerdanya experience is the light. The valley is one of the sunniest places in the Pyrenees, and on a clear winter's day, the snowy peaks of the Cadí and the Puigmal glitter against a deep blue sky while the valley floor below glows in the sunshine. A hot-air balloon flight at dawn over the valley, with the whole ring of mountains spread out around you, is unforgettable.

In summer, the Cadí-Moixéro Natural Park offers superb hiking among limestone peaks, forests and alpine meadows, and the region's lakes and Romanesque churches make for beautiful excursions.

Why Torre del Remei is one of the best mountain hotels

Torre del Remei earns its place in our Pyrenees collection because it is one of the most beautiful and characterful hotels in the range, combining extraordinary modernist architecture with a stunning mountain setting, excellent food and the intimacy of just 24 rooms.

It is a country-house hotel rather than a ski hotel, and you will need a car to explore. But for couples, food lovers and anyone seeking romance and style in the Pyrenees, it is a delight in every season.

When to go to Torre del Remei

Torre del Remei is a year-round destination. Winter, roughly December to March, brings snow to the surrounding peaks and skiing at La Molina and Masella, about half an hour away, while the valley floor often basks in sunshine. Spring brings green meadows and wildflowers, and is ideal for cycling and walking. Summer is warm but fresh at altitude, perfect for the garden pool, golf and hiking in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park; July and August are the busiest months, when many Barcelona families escape to La Cerdanya. Autumn brings golden light, mushroom season and quieter roads. Weekends are popular with visitors from Barcelona year-round, so book early for Friday and Saturday nights, and reserve a dinner table at the same time as your room. A car is essential for exploring the valley, the ski resorts and the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.
