Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa, Soldeu, Andorra

A five-star, all-suite hotel at the foot of the Grandvalira slopes in Soldeu, with a 5,000 m² spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant and supervised clubs for children.

Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa in Soldeu is the most luxurious ski hotel in Andorra, the tiny mountain principality wedged between France and Spain, high in the Pyrenees, and famous for its skiing, hiking and tax-free shopping. It stands at the foot of Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. All 135 rooms are suites, the spa covers 5,000 square metres over five floors, the dining is overseen by a three-Michelin-star chef, and the gondola station is built into the same complex. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and holds a MICHELIN Key.

Location: Soldeu, Andorra

The hotel stands at around 1,850 metres in Soldeu, in the north-east of Andorra, near the French border. It sits right at the base of the Grandvalira slopes, with ski-in, ski-out access; the Soldeu gondola is just steps away.

Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees and south-western Europe, with around 200 kilometres of pistes. Andorra has no airport; the nearest are Andorra-La Seu d'Urgell for limited flights, Toulouse, about three hours away, and Barcelona, about three and a half hours. The hotel is open in winter and summer.

Rooms and suites at the Hermitage

All 135 rooms are junior suites or larger, generously sized and decorated in a spacious Alpine style with wood, stone and warm textiles. Rooms have balconies with mountain views and whirlpool baths. There are family suites and larger suites for those wanting extra space.

The wider Hermitage complex also includes the Hermitage Mountain Residences, apartments with hotel services; the five-bedroom Hermitage Mountain Lodge; and Borda Mangautxa, a restored stone house in the remote Incles Valley, for those seeking complete seclusion.

Facilities at the Hermitage

The Sport Wellness Mountain Spa is the hotel's showpiece, spread over 5,000 square metres and five floors, with an extensive water circuit, relaxation spaces with mountain views and treatment rooms using Valmont products. Spa time is included in adult guests' stays; check the current allowance when booking.

Dining is remarkable for a ski hotel. The resort's culinary offer is supervised by Francis Paniego, a three-Michelin-star chef from La Rioja, and its restaurant Ibaya holds a Michelin star. Koy Hermitage serves high-end Japanese cuisine, and Tradició Grill is a destination for meat lovers, with several other restaurants and a pub across the complex.

Families are very well catered for, with a Baby Club, Kids' Club and Teens' Club. In summer, guests enjoy special benefits at the nearby Soldeu Golf Club, and the hotel can arrange hiking guides, mountain biking and other activities in Andorra's mountains and valleys.

The mountain moment

The defining moment at the Hermitage is the ease and scale of a ski day in Grandvalira. Step out of the hotel and onto the gondola, and within minutes you are high above Soldeu, with an enormous network of pistes stretching across the mountains towards Pas de la Casa and El Tarter. The views across the Pyrenees are vast.

At the end of the day, skiing back to the hotel's door and heading straight up to the spa, to float in warm water while watching the sun set over the mountains, is the perfect reward.

In summer, the nearby Incles Valley and the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offer superb hiking among lakes, meadows and stone shepherds' huts.

Why the Hermitage is one of the best mountain hotels

The Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa earns its place as the finest luxury ski hotel in the Pyrenees. Its ski-in, ski-out location, enormous spa, Michelin-starred dining, all-suite rooms and outstanding family facilities offer an Alpine-standard luxury experience in a mountain range that is often overlooked.

It is a large, busy resort complex rather than an intimate hideaway, and Andorra itself is bustling and commercial in places. But for families and skiers wanting luxury, value and sunshine, it is an excellent choice.

When to go to the Hermitage

The Hermitage opens in winter and summer. Grandvalira's ski season usually runs from early December to around April, with the most reliable snow typically from January to March. Christmas, New Year and February school holidays, when French and Spanish families arrive, are the busiest periods, so book family suites early. March brings sunshine and long days that are ideal for families and intermediates. Summer offers hiking in the Incles Valley and the UNESCO-listed Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, mountain biking and golf, at a much gentler pace and price than winter. Because Andorra has no airport, factor in the transfer time from Toulouse or Barcelona when planning short breaks. Families should reserve places in the Baby, Kids' or Teens' Clubs in advance for peak weeks.
