A family ski holiday can be the best week of the year, or a logistical nightmare of lost gloves, tired children and long walks in ski boots. The difference is choosing the right resort and the right hotel. The best family ski resorts have excellent kids' ski schools, gentle slopes, short transfers between hotel and lifts, and plenty to do off the slopes.

Here are the best family ski resorts in the Alps, the Pyrenees and North America, each paired with a family-friendly hotel that makes ski days easy.

What makes a great family ski resort?

  • A top kids' ski school, with English-speaking instructors and small groups.
  • Ski-in, ski-out or close-to-lift accommodation, so children aren't carrying skis.
  • Gentle, uncrowded slopes and fun children's areas.
  • Things to do off the slopes, such as pools, sledging and ice skating.
  • Reasonable travel times from the airport.

1. Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Austria

Often voted one of the best family ski areas in Europe, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis has wide, sunny slopes, superb children's areas and a huge choice of easy runs.

Where to stay: Schlosshotel Fiss, a five-star family hotel with its own private lift onto the slopes, superb children's facilities, a water world with a loop slide and an adults-only spa for parents.

2. Leogang and Saalbach, Austria

The huge Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn offers runs for every level, and Leogang is the quieter, more family-friendly side.

Where to stay: Naturhotel Forsthofgut, with a water world for children, a natural swimming lake and an adults-only forest spa.

3. Alta Badia, Dolomites, Italy

Wide, gentle, immaculately groomed runs, superb mountain huts and sunny Dolomite scenery make Alta Badia one of the best family ski areas in Italy.

Where to stay: Hotel La Perla in Corvara, a family-run hotel close to the lifts.

4. Kronplatz, Dolomites, Italy

Kronplatz has wide slopes on every side, modern lifts and great value. It featured in the top ten best-value resorts of the Post Office Ski Report 2026.

Where to stay: Alpin Panorama Hotel Hubertus, at the foot of Kronplatz, a family-run spa hotel with its famous Sky Pool.

5. Grandvalira, Andorra

Andorra's biggest ski area is popular with British families for its English-speaking ski schools, value and easy access.

Where to stay: Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa in Soldeu, with ski-in, ski-out access, all-suite rooms and excellent family facilities.

6. Lech, Austria

Lech is known for snow-sure slopes, excellent ski schools and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere, despite its glamorous reputation.

Where to stay: Hotel Gasthof Post, with a children's pool and a heated outdoor pool among the snowy gardens.

7. Whistler Blackcomb, Canada

North America's largest ski resort has terrain for every level, a pedestrian village and a huge choice of activities off the slopes, from ice skating to tubing.

Where to stay: Fairmont Chateau Whistler, at the foot of Blackcomb with ski-in, ski-out access and outdoor pools.

8. Deer Valley, Utah, USA

Deer Valley is famous for immaculate grooming, excellent service and limited ticket sales that keep the slopes uncrowded, which makes it particularly relaxing for families.

Where to stay: Montage Deer Valley or Stein Eriksen Lodge, both with ski-in, ski-out access and outstanding spas.

9. Palisades Tahoe, California, USA

The former venue of the 1960 Winter Olympics has terrain for all abilities and is close to Lake Tahoe's beaches and trails.

Where to stay: Everline Resort & Spa, with ski-in, ski-out access and excellent family facilities.

When to book a family ski holiday

School holidays drive prices. February half term is the busiest and most expensive week of the season in most European resorts, and ski schools and family rooms often sell out months ahead, so book by early autumn if you're tied to those dates. The Christmas and New Year weeks are similar. If your children are not yet at school, or you can take them out for a few days, January and March offer quieter slopes, more space in ski school and noticeably lower prices. Easter skiing can be excellent in high, snow-sure resorts such as Lech and Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, with long sunny days and a relaxed end-of-season feel.

Tips for a family ski holiday

  • Book ski school early. Children's classes fill up quickly in February half term.
  • Choose ski-in, ski-out. It is the single biggest stress-saver for families.
  • Pack spares. Extra gloves, socks and goggles save a lot of tears.
  • Plan a pool afternoon. A hotel pool or spa is the perfect reward after lessons.
  • Consider January or March. Quieter slopes and lower prices than school holidays.
