Fairmont Chateau Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

A ski-in, ski-out resort at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain, with 519 rooms, Vida Spa and its own Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler is the grand ski-in, ski-out landmark of Whistler Blackcomb, regularly rated one of the best ski resorts in North America. Built in the style of a European alpine château at the very foot of Blackcomb Mountain, it is often described as the largest ski-in, ski-out hotel on the continent. It is big, busy and polished, with a superb spa, its own championship golf course and a lobby lounge that buzzes with après-ski energy. For families and groups who want everything on the doorstep, it is the classic Whistler stay.

Location: British Columbia, Canada

The Chateau stands at the base of Blackcomb Mountain in the Upper Village, a short, pleasant walk from the restaurants, shops and bars of Whistler Village. Whistler lies in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, about 125 kilometres north of Vancouver, reached via the spectacular Sea-to-Sky Highway, which winds along the fjord of Howe Sound before climbing into the mountains. The drive from Vancouver International Airport takes around two hours.

Whistler Blackcomb's two side-by-side mountains, linked by the record-breaking Peak 2 Peak Gondola, together offer more than 8,000 acres of skiable terrain, over 200 marked runs, 16 alpine bowls and three glaciers. In summer, the same mountains become one of the world's great mountain-biking parks, with hiking, lakes and golf in the valley.

Rooms and suites at Fairmont Chateau Whistler

The hotel has 519 rooms and suites, decorated in a classic alpine style with rustic wood accents and large panoramic windows. Guests can choose their view: woodland, Whistler Valley, Rainbow Mountain or, most sought after, Blackcomb Mountain and the slopes, from the Deluxe Slopeside rooms.

There are 41 interconnecting rooms, making the hotel especially good for families and groups. Upgrading to Fairmont Gold, on the hotel's upper floors, brings rooms with more space, often a gas fireplace, and access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary breakfast, drinks and snacks, plus a dedicated concierge. Suites offer separate living areas for longer stays.

Facilities at Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Vida Spa is a major draw. Set on the mountainside, it has heated outdoor pools, three outdoor whirlpools, individual cabin saunas and steam rooms, with treatments rooted in Ayurvedic philosophy and products that honour Indigenous practices. Floating in the outdoor pool after a day on the slopes, with snow falling around you and Blackcomb rising above, is a quintessential Whistler experience.

Dining includes The Grill Room, the hotel's signature restaurant, serving steaks, chops and seafood; The Wildflower, a warm, family-friendly restaurant for breakfast and dinner with a garden patio in summer; and Portobello, a casual market-style café. The Mallard Lounge, with its fireplace, live music and slope views, is one of the most popular après-ski spots in Whistler.

In summer, the hotel's own 18-hole golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., winds through the forested valley, and there are tennis courts. Ski valet, storage and rental services make winter mornings effortless.

The mountain moment

The defining Whistler moment is riding the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, which spans the gap between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. At its highest point it hangs more than 400 metres above the valley floor, with views of the Coast Mountains stretching to the horizon and, on clear days, the glaciers of Garibaldi Provincial Park glinting in the sun.

Back at the Chateau, the perfect end to a ski day is to glide straight to the hotel's door, then head to the Mallard Lounge with a drink by the fire, watching the last skiers come down the slopes as the light fades on the mountain.

Why Fairmont Chateau Whistler is one of the best mountain hotels

Fairmont Chateau Whistler earns its place as the definitive big mountain resort hotel in North America. Its ski-in, ski-out position at the foot of Blackcomb, its excellent spa, its golf course, and its wide range of rooms and dining make it a superb choice for families, groups and anyone who wants convenience and comfort in one of the world's great ski resorts. It holds two MICHELIN Keys.

Note that Whistler is in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia rather than the Rockies proper, and this is a large, lively hotel rather than an intimate hideaway. But for a classic, all-in-one mountain holiday, winter or summer, it delivers.

When to go to Fairmont Chateau Whistler

The ski season at Whistler Blackcomb usually runs from late November to around April, with the deepest snow typically in January and February and sunny spring skiing in March. Christmas, New Year and school holidays are the busiest and most expensive weeks. Summer, roughly June to September, is a season in its own right, with the bike park, hiking, lakes and the hotel's golf course. The shoulder months of May, October and November are quieter, with some lifts and facilities closed, but good value for a spa-focused stay.
