A historic downtown adventure lodge, pairing guided Irwin cat skiing with a rooftop hot tub, chef-prepared meals and seasonal private or individual-room stays.
Eleven Scarp Ridge Lodge in Crested Butte, Colorado, is one of the most exclusive luxury ski lodges in North America. Crested Butte is often called Colorado's last great ski town: a colourful, unpretentious former mining village at the end of the road, with steep skiing, deep snow and a strong independent spirit. In the middle of its historic main street, behind a Wild West façade, an 1880s miners' saloon has been transformed into the flagship of the adventure travel company Eleven, and each winter morning a custom snowcat waits at the front door to take guests to over 1,000 acres of private powder.
Location: Crested Butte, Colorado, USA
The lodge is in downtown Crested Butte, in the heart of Colorado's Elk Mountains, at around 8,900 feet (2,700 metres). The town's brightly painted Victorian buildings, independent shops, bars and restaurants are right on the doorstep, and Crested Butte Mountain Resort, with its 15 lifts, more than 120 trails and some of the most challenging lift-served terrain in North America, is just a few minutes away.
The nearest airport is Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional, around 30 minutes away by road, and winter stays include transfers. Denver is about four to five hours' drive.
Rooms and suites at Scarp Ridge Lodge
Scarp Ridge is small and designed to be enjoyed like a private home. There are five king bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a whimsical bunk room for children that sleeps up to seven, with a connecting room for a nanny. Interiors combine Rocky Mountain warmth with European chalet style, featuring reclaimed iron from the town's old mills, rich timbers, premium bedding and roaring fires.
In winter, the lodge is typically booked as a full buyout for groups of up to around 14 guests, with a minimum stay. In other seasons, individual rooms may be available. Next door, Eleven's Sopris House offers four further bedrooms with nineteenth-century character, a private bar, a courtyard and a copper hot tub, for larger groups.
Facilities at Scarp Ridge Lodge
For a lodge of this size, the facilities are remarkable. There is an indoor saltwater pool with underwater speakers, a rock-lined steam room, sauna, indoor and outdoor hot tubs and a rooftop hot tub with views of Mount Crested Butte. A gym includes a Pilates reformer and Peloton bike, and massage therapists are on call. An oxygen-enriched air system helps guests adjust to the altitude. There is also a cinema and a playroom with chalkboard walls for children.
Chefs prepare breakfast daily, and stays typically include lunch, après snacks and drinks, with dinner on request or at one of Crested Butte's many excellent restaurants. Music is a strong theme for Eleven, with occasional live performances and special music-focused events.
The mountain moment
The defining experience is cat skiing at Irwin. Around 12 to 13 miles west of town, above the old ghost town of Irwin, Eleven has exclusive access to more than 1,000 acres of terrain, reached only by snowcat or snowmobile in winter. Irwin is a magnet for storms, receiving around 450 inches of snow a year on average, much more than Crested Butte itself, and its light, dry cold-smoke powder is legendary.
Each morning, a custom-designed snowcat picks guests up at the front door for the 45-minute ride into the wilderness. With expert guides and no other skiers, groups spend the day carving fresh tracks through glades and wide-open alpine bowls, stopping for lunch and après at two cosy on-mountain cabins. Back at the lodge, the day ends in the rooftop hot tub, watching the last light on the peaks.
In summer, Crested Butte becomes Colorado's wildflower capital and a world-famous mountain-biking destination, with fly-fishing, rafting, climbing and hiking all arranged by Eleven's guides.
Why Scarp Ridge Lodge is one of the best mountain hotels
Scarp Ridge earns its place because it offers one of the most exclusive ski experiences in North America, combined with the charm of a genuine mountain town. Private cat-skiing terrain, expert guiding, excellent wellness facilities and personal service make it a dream for serious skiers and adventurous groups.
It is not a conventional hotel and is best suited to groups booking the whole lodge. But for friends or families who love powder and adventure, and want everything taken care of in a warm, characterful setting, it is hard to beat.
When to go to Scarp Ridge Lodge
Winter is the reason most guests come, with cat skiing at Irwin typically running from December to early April and the deepest snow often arriving in January and February. Remember that in winter the lodge is usually booked as a full buyout with a minimum stay, so groups should plan well in advance. Summer is a revelation: Crested Butte is Colorado's wildflower capital, with peak blooms usually in July, and a world-class mountain-biking town. Autumn brings golden aspens and quiet trails, and individual rooms may be available outside winter.
