Thotalagala is a beautifully restored 19th-century tea planter's bungalow on the edge of the Haputale escarpment, in the southern hill country of Sri Lanka. With just seven suites, an infinity pool and some 4,000 acres of tea around it, it feels like staying in a private colonial home, and it sits on the estate where Sir Thomas Lipton built his tea empire. It is one of the most atmospheric places to stay on the island.

Location: Haputale, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's hill country rises steeply from the island's tropical lowlands into a cool, misty world of tea estates, waterfalls, forests and mountain villages. The tea that made the island famous as Ceylon still grows on its terraced slopes, and the colonial-era bungalows, factories and narrow-gauge railway built to serve it are still part of the landscape. Days are warm and nights are fresh, a welcome contrast with the heat of the coast.
Thotalagala stands on the Haputale escarpment, south-east of Nuwara Eliya, where the hill country drops away dramatically towards the southern plains. It is close to Lipton's Seat, one of the great viewpoints of Sri Lanka, and makes a natural stop between Kandy and the national parks of Yala and Udawalawe in the south. The drive from Colombo takes most of a day, so many guests break the journey in Kandy or the tea country.

Suites at Thotalagala
There are seven suites, divided between the original bungalow and a newer wing, each named after one of the pioneers of Ceylon tea, from Sir Thomas Lipton and James Taylor to Major Rogers. They have polished wooden floors, period and antique furniture and four-poster or king-size beds, and the larger suites have clawfoot bathtubs as well as walk-in showers.
The atmosphere is that of a gracious private house, with two sitting rooms, a library-like calm and a cigar room. Children aged 8 and over are welcome.
Facilities at Thotalagala
The infinity pool looks out over the garden and the distant mountains, and the terrace is the heart of the house, where afternoon tea is served on the lawn. Meals can be taken at a long communal table or privately, with Sri Lankan rice and curry as well as international dishes, breakfasts on the lawn, barbecues and picnic breakfasts in the hills.
Guests have access to the estate's historic tea factory, where you can watch the leaf being processed, and the team can arrange hikes to Lipton's Seat, birdwatching, walks on the Pekoe Trail, mountain biking and trips to Horton Plains National Park.

The mountain moment
The defining moment is the walk up to Lipton's Seat at dawn, climbing through the tea estates as the pickers start their day, to watch the sun rise over a vast panorama of hills, plains and, on a clear morning, the distant coast.
Back at the bungalow, take breakfast on the lawn, then spend the afternoon by the infinity pool, with the escarpment falling away below.
Why Thotalagala is one of the best mountain hotels
Thotalagala earns its place for its history, its setting and its intimacy. Few hotels anywhere connect you so directly with the story of tea, and with only seven suites it feels like a private estate rather than a hotel.
For another stay in a planter's bungalow, compare it with Ceylon Tea Trails near Hatton. For a contemporary wellness retreat near Kandy, see Santani, and for Ella's peaks, 98 Acres Resort.
When to go to Thotalagala
The hill country is pleasant all year, with warm days and cool nights. The driest, clearest months in Haputale are usually from January to March, the best time for views from Lipton's Seat, while the monsoons can bring mist and heavy rain at other times of year, especially from around May to September and October to December. Early mornings are often the clearest time of day.
