Santani is Sri Lanka's most striking wellness retreat: a cluster of minimalist chalets on a former tea estate in the hills above Kandy, each designed like a cinema facing a single view of the valley. It holds one Michelin Key, and its approach to wellness is serious but never austere, with Ayurvedic consultations, yoga, a three-level spa with a thermal salt pool, and food built around the six tastes of Ayurveda. It is a place to slow down completely.

Location: the hills above Kandy, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's hill country rises steeply from the island's tropical lowlands into a cool, misty world of tea estates, waterfalls, forests and mountain villages. The tea that made the island famous as Ceylon still grows on its terraced slopes, and the colonial-era bungalows, factories and narrow-gauge railway built to serve it are still part of the landscape. Days are warm and nights are fresh, a welcome contrast with the heat of the coast.

Santani stands on the Arantenna Estate, a remote hillside around an hour's drive from Kandy, the last royal capital and home of the Temple of the Tooth. Colombo's international airport is about four and a half hours away by road; the train from Colombo to Kandy takes around two hours, followed by a drive of about an hour, and Cinnamon Air flies to a lake airstrip about an hour from the resort.

Chalets and villas at Santani

There are 20 chalets, most facing the mountains, designed by Thisara Thanapathy Associates in a pared-back style inspired by Kandyan architecture: thin metal frames, reclaimed timber and concrete, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the valley and the forest. Interiors are calm and spare, with king-size beds and ceiling fans, so the view does all the work.

For families and small groups, two- and three-bedroom Mountain Villas have their own infinity pools and air conditioning. The chalets and the spa are for guests aged 12 and over, while children of all ages can stay in the villas.

Facilities at Santani

The heart of the resort is its open-fronted spa, spread over three floors, with a cedar-wood sauna, a steam room, a thermal pool and an outdoor thermal salt bath, all included in the stay, along with massages and Ayurvedic treatments from a resident doctor. Yoga and meditation sessions take place in open pavilions facing the hills, and there is a free-form outdoor pool.

Meals are included and change daily, with no set menus, based on organic ingredients and the six tastes of Ayurveda; guests on personalised wellness programmes can follow cleansing, ketogenic or Ayurvedic plans. Walks through the surrounding estate and villages are a highlight.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is the early morning, when mist fills the valley below your chalet and the hills appear one ridge at a time as the sun rises, before a yoga session in a pavilion open to the forest.

In the late afternoon, sink into the outdoor thermal salt bath and watch the light fade over the hills, with nothing to hear but birds and the wind in the trees.

Why Santani is one of the best mountain hotels

Santani earns its place for its architecture, its setting and the quality of its wellness, recognised with a Michelin Key. It is one of the few retreats anywhere that feels genuinely restorative without being strict, and its minimalist design makes the hill country the star.

For colonial-era tea country, combine it with Ceylon Tea Trails or Thotalagala, and for views over Ella's peaks, 98 Acres Resort.

When to go to Santani

The hill country is pleasant all year, with warm days and cool nights. The driest months around Kandy are usually from January to April, while the south-west monsoon, from around May to September, and the north-east monsoon, from around October to January, can bring heavy afternoon rain. A wellness stay works in any season, and the rain makes the hills even greener.
