Jicaro Island Ecolodge occupies its own small island among Las Isletas, the scattering of volcanic islands in Lake Nicaragua, just a short boat ride from the colonial city of Granada. Its timber casitas, a natural pool carved into the rock and a yoga deck all look across the water to the forested cone of Mombacho volcano, making it one of the most peaceful and beautiful hideaways in Central America.

Location: Lake Nicaragua, Granada

The island is one of around 365 islets, Las Isletas, formed when Mombacho volcano erupted around 20,000 years ago, scattering rock into Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America. Granada, founded in 1524 and one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas, is a short boat ride away, with its colourful streets, churches and cathedral. Mombacho, now dormant, is covered in cloud forest, with trails around its craters, and the active Masaya volcano, where you can sometimes see a glowing lava lake, is nearby. Managua's international airport is around an hour by road from Granada.

Granada is a delight to explore, with horse-drawn carriages, colourful colonial houses and the lively Calzada street of cafés and restaurants. Nearby, the Laguna de Apoyo, a crater lake of warm, clear water, is perfect for swimming and kayaking, the Masaya volcano can be visited at night to look into its glowing crater, and the island of Ometepe, formed by two volcanoes rising from the lake, is a short journey south.

Casitas at Jicaro Island Ecolodge

The two-storey casitas are built from certified local wood, with a king bed and a queen bed, open-air living spaces and views across the lake. Designed to blend into the island's trees and rocks, they are simple but beautifully crafted, with the sounds of birds and water all around.

With just a handful of casitas, the island feels private and peaceful, and the staff are warm and attentive. The lodge's commitment to sustainability, from its construction to its food sourcing and community projects, has earned it recognition as one of the leading eco-lodges in Central America.

Facilities at Jicaro Island Ecolodge

The all-natural pool, built into the existing rock, has a swim-up bar and views of the lake and Mombacho. There is a wellness centre and spa, a yoga deck over the water with a daily class, and a restaurant serving organic, local food, including fish bought from traditional fishermen. Activities include kayaking among the islets, hikes on Mombacho, tours of Granada and a behind-the-scenes sustainability tour.

The mountain moment

The Jicaro moment is sunset from the rock pool, as the cone of Mombacho turns violet against the sky, egrets fly low over the lake and the lights of fishermen's boats appear among the islands.

A kayak trip at dawn among the islets, past fishermen in wooden canoes, colourful island homes and herons standing in the shallows, is one of the most peaceful experiences in Central America.

Why Jicaro Island Ecolodge is one of the best mountain hotels

Jicaro earns its place for its setting, its sustainability and its sense of escape, on a private island beneath a volcano and a short ride from one of Central America's most beautiful colonial cities. It is small and simple compared with big resorts, and Nicaragua's political situation means some travellers will want to check current advice before booking. But for nature lovers and couples, it is a hidden gem.

For Guatemala's volcanoes, see Casa Palopó.

Two or three nights is ideal, allowing time to explore Granada, hike Mombacho and simply relax on the island. Many travellers combine Jicaro with the beaches of the Pacific coast, the island of Ometepe and the colonial city of León. Bring light clothing, sun protection and insect repellent, and check current travel advice before booking.

When to go to Jicaro Island Ecolodge

The dry season, from December to April, brings sunny days and calm water, and is the most popular time. The green season, from May to November, brings afternoon rain, lush landscapes and fewer visitors. Mombacho's cloud forest is green all year, and the lake is warm for swimming in every season.
