A Moroccan retreat above a High Atlas valley, where antique-filled rooms, Berber Tents and private Riads meet mountain views, an infinity pool and warm local hospitality.
Kasbah Tamadot is Sir Richard Branson's luxury hotel in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, and it has a romantic origin story: Branson's mother is said to have fallen in love with the kasbah on a ballooning trip, and in 1998 he bought it. Once the home of the Italian antiques dealer and designer Luciano Tempo, it sits at the top of a valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, with views across to Mount Toubkal. Today, part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection, it is one of Morocco's finest hotels: a retreat of antique-filled rooms, luxurious Berber tents, private riads and one of the most beautiful infinity pools in Africa.
Location: Atlas Mountains, Morocco
Kasbah Tamadot is near Asni, a small Berber village and bustling market town in the foothills of the High Atlas, about an hour's drive (roughly 45 minutes from the airport) south of Marrakech. The name means "soft breeze" in Berber, and the kasbah sits high above a river valley, with Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, on the horizon.
Its location makes it ideal for combining the mountains with the souks and riads of Marrakech, or as a base for exploring Berber villages, valleys and waterfalls. Kasbah du Toubkal, also in our collection, is a short drive away in the neighbouring Imlil valley.
Rooms and suites at Kasbah Tamadot
The hotel has around 40 rooms, suites, tents and riads, all individually decorated with traditional Moroccan furnishings and antiques from Morocco, India and beyond, many from Luciano Tempo's vast collection. Each room has its own Berber name.
The Berber Tents are a highlight: spacious, luxurious tented suites with their own terraces, and several with private plunge pools or hot tubs, looking out over the valley. Most recently, the hotel has added riads: two-bedroom villas with private pools and terraces, ideal for families or friends. At the top of the range are the Master Suite and other larger suites with sweeping views.
Facilities at Kasbah Tamadot
The infinity pool is the hotel's most famous feature, surrounded by 360-degree views of the High Atlas. There is also an indoor pool for cooler months, and the Asounfou Spa offers a traditional Moroccan hammam, massages and treatments using local ingredients such as argan oil.
Dining is a highlight, with two restaurants serving Moroccan and international dishes, often made with produce from the hotel's own gardens. Kanoun specialises in traditional Moroccan and Berber cooking, including ksra, an artisan bread. Meals on the terrace, overlooking the valley, are wonderful. There are also tennis courts, a fitness room and a library.
Activities include Moroccan cooking classes, guided hiking and cycling in the Atlas, visits to Berber villages and markets, and the hotel's "Authentically Berber" cultural experiences. Around 98% of the staff come from local Berber communities, and the hotel supports community projects through the Eve Branson Foundation.
The mountain moment
The defining moment is a swim in the infinity pool at the end of the day, as the sun sets behind the mountains, the valley below falls into shadow and the snow on the distant peaks turns pink. Few places in the world combine luxury, culture and mountain scenery quite so beautifully.
Another magical moment is a guided walk through the surrounding valleys, past terraced fields, walnut groves and earth-built villages, returning to a long lunch on the terrace.
Why Kasbah Tamadot is one of the best mountain hotels
Kasbah Tamadot earns its place as the leading luxury mountain retreat in North Africa. It holds three MICHELIN Keys, the guide's highest hotel distinction, and has featured on Condé Nast Traveller's Gold List and TIME's World's Greatest Places. It was rebuilt and reopened after the 2023 Atlas earthquake, with new riads, and is stronger than ever.
It offers a rare combination of exotic glamour, warm Berber hospitality and genuine mountain scenery, just an hour from Marrakech. For couples, families and anyone seeking a romantic escape, it is unforgettable.
When to go to Kasbah Tamadot
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with warm, sunny days ideal for hiking and cycling in the Atlas, blossom in the valleys in spring and clear, golden light in autumn. Summer is hot in Marrakech, but the hotel's higher setting is noticeably cooler, making the infinity pool and shaded terraces especially welcome. Winter brings crisp, bright days, cold evenings and snow on the distant peaks, and the indoor pool and hammam come into their own. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest periods, so book the Berber Tents and riads well ahead, as there are only a few of each. Ramadan dates move each year, and the rhythm of the surrounding villages changes during the holy month, so check the dates when planning.
