Location: Chamonix, France

Chamonix is one of the great mountain towns of the world, set in a deep valley at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe at over 4,800 metres. It is the birthplace of modern mountaineering and hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs from the town to 3,842 metres, the Montenvers train runs to the Mer de Glace glacier, and the Vallée Blanche, one of the most famous off-piste descents in the world, begins high above town. Geneva Airport is around an hour away by road.

The Hameau stands in landscaped grounds on the edge of the town centre, a few minutes' walk from Chamonix's shops and restaurants and around ten minutes from the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Many rooms have balconies looking straight up at the Mont Blanc massif.

There are around 37 rooms and suites across two main buildings. The Albert 1er has a calm, contemporary style, while La Ferme, the farmhouse, is warmly rustic, built with wood reclaimed from old Alpine chalets, with exposed beams, stone and fireplaces. Many rooms have balconies facing Mont Blanc, and the largest duplex suite covers around 150 square metres.

For families, friends and honeymooners, the hamlet also has a handful of traditional wooden chalets with their own living spaces, offering the privacy of a private chalet with the services of a five-star hotel.

Facilities at Le Hameau Albert 1er

Food is at the heart of the Hameau. The Albert 1er restaurant is one of the most acclaimed in the French Alps, a Michelin-starred dining room serving refined modern cuisine and a remarkable wine list, while La Maison Carrier, a recreated Savoyard farmhouse, serves hearty regional dishes by the fire and is one of the most popular restaurants in Chamonix. The Quartz Bar offers cocktails and small plates.

The Le Bachal spa has a steam room, a jacuzzi and treatment rooms, and the pool is indoor-outdoor, with a glass divider so guests can swim outside in the snow in winter. There is also a small gym.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is a winter evening in the outdoor pool, steam rising into the cold air, as the last light turns the glaciers and granite spires of the Mont Blanc massif pink above the town.

By day, ride the Aiguille du Midi to 3,842 metres for the view across the roof of Europe, or ski the Vallée Blanche with a guide, then return for dinner by the fire at La Maison Carrier or a tasting menu at Albert 1er.
