A historic five-star address in central Chamonix, pairing mountain-facing rooms with a heated outdoor pool, Clarins spa and Le Matafan restaurant.
Hôtel Mont-Blanc is the most elegant five-star hotel in Chamonix, one of the great mountain towns of the world, the birthplace of modern mountaineering and host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Above it rises Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. In the centre of town, in a peaceful garden, the hotel has welcomed travellers since 1849. Recently renovated, it blends Belle Époque grandeur with contemporary chic, and it has one of the finest views in Chamonix from its year-round outdoor pool.
Location: Chamonix, France
The hotel sits in the heart of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, at around 1,035 metres in the Haute-Savoie, close to the borders with Switzerland and Italy. The town's church, shops and restaurants are a couple of minutes' walk away, and the railway station around six minutes. The Brévent cable car is a short walk away, and the famous Aiguille du Midi cable car about ten minutes, with a free ski shuttle to other areas.
Geneva Airport is roughly an hour away by road, making Chamonix one of the most accessible major Alpine resorts. The hotel is open year-round, and the town is as busy in summer, with climbers and hikers, as it is in winter.
Rooms and suites at Hôtel Mont-Blanc
The hotel has around 40 rooms and suites, renovated by French interior designer Sybille de Margerie. The style is warm and contemporary, with alpine touches, natural materials and luxurious details such as premium bedding, Clarins toiletries, Bose speakers and curated minibars.
Standard and Superior rooms include connecting options for families. Prestige rooms have sofa seating and views of Le Brévent. Junior Suites come with sun-filled balconies, spa-like bathrooms and, in some cases, views of Mont Blanc. At the top of the range, the Duplex Suite and the Penthouse Suite each have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a private sauna and a balcony facing Mont Blanc; the Penthouse even has a bathtub positioned to look straight at the summit.
Facilities at Hôtel Mont-Blanc
The outdoor heated pool is the hotel's signature. Open year-round, it is rare in the Alps, and swimming in it with snow falling, while Mont Blanc and its glaciers rise above you, is unforgettable. Alongside it, there is a whirlpool tub, and the Clarins spa offers treatments including a signature Mont Blanc ritual designed for skiers and hikers.
Restaurant Le Matafan, also designed by Sybille de Margerie, serves modern, seasonal Savoyard cuisine. In winter, tables surround a central contemporary fireplace; in summer, meals move out to the garden terrace with views of the mountains. Dishes such as house-smoked salmon cooked over a wood fire with local lentils show off the kitchen's approach. There is also a bar, library, garden and fitness centre, and the concierge can arrange guides for skiing, climbing and hiking.
The mountain moment
The defining Chamonix experience is riding the Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest in the world, which climbs from the town to a rocky pinnacle at around 3,842 metres. At the top, you stand face to face with Mont Blanc and its glaciers, with views across the Alps to the Matterhorn on a clear day. For the brave, the glass-floored Step into the Void offers a view straight down more than 1,000 metres.
From there, experienced skiers with a guide can descend the legendary Vallée Blanche, one of the world's great off-piste runs, around 20 kilometres across glaciers and seracs back to Chamonix. Back at the hotel, a swim in the outdoor pool, gazing up at the same mountain you stood beside that morning, completes the day.
Why Hôtel Mont-Blanc is one of the best mountain hotels
Hôtel Mont-Blanc earns its place because it is the most elegant address in Chamonix, a town defined by its mountains. It combines history, contemporary design, an excellent restaurant and that wonderful outdoor pool, in a central location that puts the town and its cable cars on your doorstep.
It is not ski-in, ski-out, and Chamonix is a lively mountain-sports town rather than a manicured resort. But for anyone drawn to Mont Blanc, whether to ski, climb, hike or simply gaze at it, this is the place to stay.
When to go to Hôtel Mont-Blanc
Hôtel Mont-Blanc is open year-round, and so is Chamonix. Winter, from around December to April, brings skiing across the valley's areas and the Vallée Blanche, usually best from February onwards when the glacier is well covered. Summer, especially July and August, is high season for climbers and hikers, with the Aiguille du Midi and the high trails at their busiest, so book cable-car slots early. June and September are quieter, with good weather and fewer crowds. Whatever the season, the outdoor pool with Mont Blanc above it is the constant.
