Chamonix is one of the great mountain towns of the world. At the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe, it is the birthplace of modern mountaineering, the host of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and the home of the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Vallée Blanche. Unlike many purpose-built ski resorts, it is a real, year-round town, with history, restaurants and life in every season.
Chamonix has just three five-star hotels, and each is excellent in its own way. Here is how they compare, along with our favourite stylish boutique alternative.
The best luxury hotels in Chamonix at a glance
- Best for food: Le Hameau Albert 1er
- Best for elegance and an outdoor pool: Hôtel Mont-Blanc
- Best for an intimate stay: Grand Hôtel des Alpes
- Best boutique value: Hôtel Le Faucigny
1. Le Hameau Albert 1er
Best for: food lovers, couples, families in private chalets
Run by the same family since 1903, this Relais & Châteaux hamlet is Chamonix's most celebrated hotel. It combines a contemporary hotel, a farmhouse built from reclaimed Alpine timber and a handful of private chalets, many with Mont Blanc views, plus the Michelin-starred Albert 1er restaurant, the hugely popular Savoyard bistro La Maison Carrier and an indoor-outdoor pool. 2. Hôtel Mont-Blanc
Best for: elegance, a central garden setting, swimming with a view
In a peaceful garden in the centre of town, Hôtel Mont-Blanc has welcomed travellers since 1849. Recently renovated, it blends Belle Époque grandeur with contemporary chic, and its heated outdoor pool, open all year, has one of the finest views in Chamonix, looking straight up at the mountain it is named after. 3. Grand Hôtel des Alpes
Best for: couples and friends, a peaceful base in the heart of town
A grand hotel of 1840, restored as a luxury boutique hotel with just over 30 rooms and suites, the Grand Hôtel des Alpes stands on a pedestrian street a few minutes from the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers train. Its spa, with an indoor pool, hammam and salt wall, overlooks the river and Mont Blanc. There is no formal restaurant, but in winter the salon serves afternoon and aperitif buffets. 4. Hôtel Le Faucigny
Best for: style on a budget, skiers and climbers
Not five-star, but our favourite stylish alternative: a 28-room chalet hotel on Place de l'Église, with Scandinavian-inspired interiors, a small spa and a relaxed atmosphere, at a fraction of the price of the grand hotels. It is a sister hotel to Hôtel Mont-Blanc. Read our review of Hôtel Le Faucigny.
How to choose a luxury hotel in Chamonix
Choose Le Hameau Albert 1er if food matters most, or if you want a private chalet with hotel service. Choose Hôtel Mont-Blanc for classic elegance, a garden and the best outdoor pool in town. Choose the Grand Hôtel des Alpes for a smaller, quieter stay where you can walk to everything and eat out each night. Choose Le Faucigny for style and value. All four are in the centre of Chamonix, within walking distance of the Aiguille du Midi.
If you prefer a chalet village to a mountain town, Les Fermes de Marie in Megève, around 40 minutes away, is one of the most charming luxury hotels in the French Alps.
When to go to Chamonix
Chamonix is a year-round destination. Winter, from December to April, brings skiing at the Grands Montets, Brévent-Flégère and Balme, and guided descents of the Vallée Blanche from the top of the Aiguille du Midi, usually from late January when conditions allow. Summer, from June to September, is the season for hiking, climbing, paragliding and the cable cars to the high peaks, and the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc fills the town in late August. September is often the best month of all, with settled weather and fewer crowds. Several hotels close for a few weeks in spring and autumn.
Getting to Chamonix
Geneva Airport is around an hour away by road, with regular shuttle transfers, which makes Chamonix one of the most accessible great mountain resorts in the Alps. The Mont Blanc Tunnel links it to Courmayeur in Italy in around 20 minutes. For more inspiration, see our guide to the best ski-in ski-out hotels in the Alps.
