Desert Rock is one of the most extraordinary new mountain hotels in the world: a resort carved into a granite massif of the Hejaz Mountains, a short drive inland from Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. Opened in late 2024, it has 64 villas and suites, some hanging from the cliffs, some tucked into crevices and some carved into the rock as caves, each with its own private pool. Inspired by the rock-cut architecture of the ancient Nabataeans, it combines striking design with real mountain adventure, from via ferrata and abseiling to a climb to a hilltop observatory for stargazing.

Location: The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia

Desert Rock is part of The Red Sea, a vast new luxury destination on Saudi Arabia's west coast, around 500 kilometres north of Jeddah, between the towns of Umluj and Al Wajh. The resort lies in a hidden wadi enclosed by towering rock walls, about 20 minutes by road from Red Sea International Airport, which has domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah and a growing number of international connections. Direct flights from London to Riyadh take around six and a half hours.

The landscape is one of bare granite peaks, boulder fields and sandy valleys, glowing red and gold at sunrise and sunset. Native planting has turned the valley floor into a green oasis, and rock excavated during construction was reused across the resort.

Villas and suites at Desert Rock

There are 64 villas and suites, designed by Oppenheim Architecture with interiors by Studio Paolo Ferrari, in calm, earthy tones that echo the rock outside. Every one has a private, temperature-controlled pool and a dedicated Villa Host.

The Wadi Villas, from around 171 square metres, sit on the valley floor; the Cliff Hanging Villas are perched on the rock face with views across the massif; the Mountain Cave Suites are carved into the mountain itself; and the Mountain Crevice Villas are tucked between rock walls. For families and groups there are two-bedroom villas, the 591-square-metre Mountain Crevice Skyline Villa and a three-bedroom Royal Villa of more than 1,100 square metres. Buggies carry guests between villas, restaurants and the spa.

Facilities at Desert Rock

Dining is spread across the resort. Nyra serves wood-fire cooking with local produce, Basalt offers Saudi and international dishes, the Wadi Pool & Grill serves lunch beside the main infinity pool, and MICA is a bar known for inventive mocktails. The Library is a quiet lounge, and The Observatory, at the highest point of the resort, is a sunset and stargazing lounge reached by a climb of more than 600 steps and a rope bridge.

The spa has indoor and outdoor treatment rooms with cliff views, a hammam, a water therapy room and desert-inspired treatments, alongside a yoga pavilion and a gym. Akun, the resort's adventure centre, runs via ferrata, abseiling, rock climbing, ziplining, hiking and scrambling, e-bike and e-quad tours and camel rides, as well as astronomy sessions, and there is a kids' club for younger guests.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is the climb to The Observatory at the end of the day, crossing the rope bridge as the granite peaks turn red and gold, then watching the stars come out in some of the clearest night skies you will ever see.

By day, clip into the via ferrata and climb the rock face above the wadi, then cool off in your own pool, with nothing but the silence of the mountains around you.

Why Desert Rock is one of the best mountain hotels

Desert Rock earns its place for its setting and its architecture. Few hotels anywhere are built so completely into a mountain, and the result feels both dramatic and deeply private, with every villa its own retreat. It is also a genuine base for mountain adventure, not just a beautiful place to look at the rocks.

It is very expensive, some areas and the observatory are not step-free, and summer is extremely hot, but for design lovers and adventurous couples it is one of the most memorable stays in the Middle East. For mountain retreats in Oman, compare it with Alila Jabal Akhdar and Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, and for desert-mountain architecture in Morocco, Kasbah Tamadot.

When to go to Desert Rock

The best time to visit is from around October to April, when days are warm and sunny and nights are cool, ideal for climbing, hiking and stargazing. Winter, from December to February, is the most comfortable season. Summer, from June to September, is extremely hot, so outdoor activities are limited to early mornings and evenings, though the private pools and spa make it possible to enjoy a quieter stay.
