Location: Jebel Akhdar, Oman

The resort sits on the edge of a gorge on the Saiq Plateau, about two and a half hours' drive from Muscat International Airport and less than an hour from Nizwa.

The Hajar mountains form the rocky spine of northern Oman, and Jebel Akhdar, the 'Green Mountain', is named for the terraced orchards that cling to its high plateau. At around 2,000 metres, it is often 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the coast, and its villages grow pomegranates, apricots, walnuts and Damask roses. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed beyond the checkpoint at the foot of the mountain road, so the resort's transfers are the easiest option.

From the resort, walking trails lead along the gorge to the terraced villages, where farmers still tend their crops using ancient falaj irrigation channels, a UNESCO-listed system. Nizwa, with its fort and its lively souk, is less than an hour away, and the mud-brick village of Misfat al Abriyeen and Oman's highest peak, Jebel Shams, make excellent day trips.

Suites and villas at Alila Jabal Akhdar

Accommodation is in suites and villas built from local stone, arranged in clusters along the gorge edge like an Omani mountain village. Interiors are calm and natural, with wood, stone and soft textiles, and the Ridge View suites have the most direct views into the canyon.

The design, by Omani and international architects, uses traditional building techniques and materials, with stone walls, timber ceilings and small windows that frame the views like paintings. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, with no crowds and plenty of space.

Facilities at Alila Jabal Akhdar

The curved outdoor infinity pool, heated though still bracing in winter, looks down into the gorge, and there is a warm indoor plunge pool. Spa Alila has seven treatment rooms, a Vichy shower and jacuzzis. Juniper, the resort's restaurant, serves international cuisine with an Arabian twist from breakfast to dinner. The resort arranges hikes along the terraced villages, visits to Nizwa's fort and souk, and stargazing.

The mountain moment

The Alila moment is a morning swim in the infinity pool, the canyon falling away beneath you in shades of ochre and grey, as eagles circle on the thermals and the silence of the mountain settles over everything.

Why Alila Jabal Akhdar is one of the best mountain hotels

Alila earns its place for its architecture, its tranquillity and its setting. It is a beautifully designed, intimate retreat that feels part of the mountain. It has only one restaurant, the pool is chilly in winter, and the final road requires a four-wheel drive. But for design lovers and couples seeking peace, it is exceptional.

Plan two or three nights to enjoy the views, the spa and the walks, and bring warm clothing for the evenings, which can be cold in winter. Dress modestly in the villages. Alila pairs well with a stay in Muscat, a night in the Wahiba Sands desert and a few days on the coast.

When to go to Alila Jabal Akhdar

October to April brings sunny, mild days on the mountain and is the most popular time to visit, while the rose harvest in late March and April fills the air with fragrance. Winter nights can drop close to freezing, so the heated pools and fires are welcome. In summer, when Muscat swelters, the mountain stays pleasantly cool, making it a favourite retreat for Omani families.
