Zephyr Cove Resort, Zephyr Cove, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA

Zephyr Cove Resort is a classic Lake Tahoe getaway, a cluster of rustic cabins among the pines beside one of the lake's best sandy beaches, on the Nevada shore. It began in the late nineteenth century as a simple inn for silver prospectors, and today it offers an old-fashioned, family-friendly mountain holiday, with paddle-wheeler cruises, boating and beach days in summer, and snowmobiling in winter, at a price that is rare at Tahoe.

Location: Zephyr Cove, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA

The resort sits on the south-east shore of Lake Tahoe in Zephyr Cove, Nevada, beside Highway 50, a short drive north of Stateline and South Lake Tahoe. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is around an hour and a quarter by road. Edgewood Tahoe Resort, also in our collection, is a few minutes south.

The surrounding shoreline, protected by the US Forest Service, is wooded and quiet, with clear water, granite boulders and views across the lake to the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada on the California side.

Lake Tahoe's south-east shore is famous for its clear water and dramatic scenery, and Zephyr Cove has one of its longest sandy beaches. From the resort, it is easy to explore the whole lake, from the casinos and nightlife of Stateline to the quieter beaches and trails of the east shore, and the west shore's Emerald Bay and D.L. Bliss State Park.

Rooms and suites at Zephyr Cove Resort

Accommodation ranges from over two dozen rustic cabins set among the trees near the shore to hotel-style rooms in the historic lodge, along with campsites and newer Airstream trailers. The cabins, in a simple, old-Tahoe style with timber interiors, are the ones to choose for the classic experience, and some sleep larger families.

Interiors are basic and cosy rather than luxurious. Prices vary greatly by season and cabin type, and the most affordable options sit within a modest budget outside peak summer weeks; check rates when booking.

Facilities at Zephyr Cove Resort

The Lodge restaurant serves American classics, seafood and vegetarian dishes with local ingredients, and the seasonal Sunset Bar & Grille, open from late spring to early autumn, serves drinks and pub food steps from the beach.

The beach is the heart of the resort in summer, with kayaks, paddleboards, parasailing and boat rentals, as well as horse riding on nearby trails. The resort is also home port for the MS Dixie II, a large paddle-wheeler that offers scenic and sunset dinner cruises across the lake to Emerald Bay. In winter, snowmobile tours run through the snowy forests above the lake.

The resort is operated under a permit with the US Forest Service, which manages much of the surrounding shoreline, and this protection helps preserve its natural, wooded character, with tall pines shading the cabins and paths leading down to the water.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is a cruise aboard the MS Dixie II into Emerald Bay, one of the most photographed spots on Lake Tahoe, where steep, forested slopes surround a tiny island and the water shifts from emerald to deep blue. On the return, the sun sets over the Sierra, turning the whole lake gold.

Back on the beach at Zephyr Cove, as darkness falls, the stars over the lake are spectacular.

Why Zephyr Cove Resort is one of the best mountain hotels

Zephyr Cove Resort earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers a genuine, old-fashioned Lake Tahoe experience, right on the water, at a price far below the lake's luxury resorts. It is simple, rustic and busy in summer, and the beach attracts day visitors. But for families and anyone who loves classic lakeside cabins, it is a joy.

Its history gives it a charm newer resorts lack. Generations of families have returned here each summer, and the lodge, cabins and paddle-wheeler recall the golden age of Tahoe holidays, when the lake was a summer escape from the heat of California and Nevada.

When to go to Zephyr Cove Resort

Summer, from June to early September, is peak season, with the beach, boating and cruises in full swing, and the busiest time; book cabins well in advance. September is often the best month of all, with warm water, sunny days and fewer people. Winter brings snowmobiling and quiet, snowy days, with skiing at Heavenly a short drive away, and the lowest prices of the year.
