Location: Ischgl, Austria

The hotel stands on the main street of Ischgl, about 100 metres from the lifts into the Silvretta Arena, one of the largest ski areas in Austria, which links across the border to duty-free Samnaun in Switzerland. Ischgl is famous for its lively après-ski and its Top of the Mountain concerts at the start and end of the season. Innsbruck Airport is about one and a quarter hours by road, and Zurich about two and a half hours.

Ischgl's Silvretta Arena has around 240 kilometres of pistes, much of it above 2,000 metres, which gives the resort a long, snow-sure season. The ski area crosses the border into Switzerland at Samnaun, where duty-free shops sell everything from watches to fuel, and the Idalp plateau is the heart of the slopes. Ischgl has transformed itself from a small farming village into one of the most fashionable resorts in Austria, with high-end hotels, excellent restaurants and some of the liveliest après-ski in the Alps.

Martin Sieberer's cooking combines Tyrolean tradition with creative modern techniques, and dinner at the hotel is a highlight of any stay. The hotel's central location means Ischgl's lifts, shops and lively après-ski bars are within easy reach, while the spa provides a calm retreat from the bustle of the village.

The mountain moment

The Trofana moment is the Top of the Mountain concert, when big-name artists perform on the slopes high above Ischgl, followed by a long soak in the outdoor pool and a gourmet dinner. Or simply a long day on the Silvretta's wide, snow-sure slopes, with lunch across the border in Switzerland.

On a sunny day, ski across the border to Samnaun in Switzerland for lunch and a little duty-free shopping, then make your way back across the Silvretta Arena as the light softens. In the evening, Ischgl's après-ski is legendary, but the Trofana Royal's spa and gourmet restaurant offer a more refined end to the day.

Why Trofana Royal is one of the best mountain hotels

Trofana Royal earns its place for its spa, food and location in one of the Alps' most famous ski resorts. It is expensive, and Ischgl's après-ski is loud and boisterous. But for skiers who want five-star comfort and gourmet dining at the heart of the action, it is the best in town.

For another Tyrolean classic, see Tennerhof in Kitzbühel.

For skiers who want the energy of Ischgl but the comfort and calm of a five-star retreat, the Trofana Royal strikes the perfect balance, with its spa and kitchen among the best in Austria.
