Location: Lamoille, Ruby Mountains, Nevada, USA
The lodge sits at around 7,000 feet, roughly 2,100 metres, at the base of Conrad Creek in the Ruby Mountains, near the village of Lamoille, about half an hour from Elko, Nevada. Elko Regional Airport has connecting flights, and Salt Lake City is around three and a half hours away by road.
The Ruby Mountains rise abruptly from the high desert of the Great Basin, with peaks over 11,000 feet, alpine lakes and the deep, glacier-carved Lamoille Canyon, sometimes called the Yosemite of Nevada. They receive deep, light snow in winter and offer superb hiking, fishing and wildlife in summer.
Elko, the nearest town, is a historic railroad and ranching town with a strong Basque heritage, celebrated each summer at the National Basque Festival, and its Basque restaurants, serving hearty family-style meals, are a local institution. The town is also famous for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, held each winter.
Rooms and suites at Ruby 360 Lodge
The lodge has ten rooms available for nightly stays outside the busy winter heli-skiing season: three king rooms and seven rooms with two queen beds. Two yurts, the Conrad Creek Yurt and Ruby High Yurt, offer a more adventurous option. The building, around 10,000 square feet, is designed in a contemporary mountain style, with views across the Ruby Mountains and the Lamoille Valley.
In winter, the lodge is primarily used by heli-skiing guests on multi-day packages, so check availability for nightly stays.
The lodge's design, with large windows, timber and stone, makes the most of its setting, and the common areas, with their fireplaces and long tables, are designed for groups to gather after a day in the mountains, giving it the convivial atmosphere of a private ski lodge.
Facilities at Ruby 360 Lodge
In winter, the lodge is the base for Ruby Mountain Heli Experience, with helicopters flying skiers to vast areas of untracked powder across the range. In summer and autumn, from Memorial Day through October, the lodge serves prix-fixe four-course dinners on Thursday to Saturday evenings, with wine, outdoor games and live music, along with lower-priced Sunset Wednesday dinners.
The lodge also hosts weddings and events, and one- or three-day packages include meals and activities such as hiking, trap shooting, wake surfing on nearby reservoirs and off-road vehicle rides.
The mountain moment
The defining moment is a heli-skiing day in the Ruby Mountains: lifting off from the lodge, flying over snowy ridges and landing on a high summit, then skiing thousands of feet of untouched powder down wide bowls and gullies, with the vast, empty Great Basin stretching to the horizon.
In summer, drive the scenic road up Lamoille Canyon, past waterfalls and alpine meadows, and hike to Island Lake or Liberty Lake, high mountain lakes beneath granite peaks, then return to the lodge for dinner on the terrace as the sun sets over the valley.
Why Ruby 360 Lodge is one of the best mountain hotels
Ruby 360 Lodge earns its place because it reveals a side of Nevada few visitors ever see: wild, high mountains, deep snow and a sense of true remoteness. It is not a conventional hotel, winter stays are mainly for heli-skiing packages, and it is a long way from major airports. But for adventurous skiers and travellers who want something genuinely different, it is a hidden gem.
It also adds real variety to our Nevada collection: alongside the lakeside resorts of Lake Tahoe, it shows the state's wilder, emptier mountain heart.
When to go to Ruby 360 Lodge
Winter, from around January to March, is the heli-skiing season, with the deepest snow typically in February and March; book packages well in advance. Summer, from Memorial Day through October, is the season for nightly stays, dinners, hiking and fishing, with wildflowers in Lamoille Canyon in early summer and golden aspens in late September. Spring and early winter are quieter shoulder seasons.
