Edgewood Tahoe Resort is the finest lakefront hotel on Lake Tahoe, and Lake Tahoe is the most photographed lake on Instagram. On the Nevada shore of this vast alpine lake, a grand timber lodge looks across water so clear you can see far into its depths, framed by the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada. It sits beside one of America's most celebrated public golf courses, and it combines a beach, a spa and nearby skiing in one of the West's great mountain playgrounds.

Location: Stateline, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA
The resort lies on the south-east shore of Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada, just over the border from South Lake Tahoe, California, at around 1,900 metres. The lake straddles the two states, and Edgewood sits on a long stretch of private shoreline, a short drive from the casinos, shops and restaurants of Stateline.
Heavenly Mountain Resort, one of the largest ski areas in the region, is minutes away by car. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is around an hour and a quarter by road, and Emerald Bay, one of the most beautiful corners of the lake, about half an hour's drive.
Lake Tahoe itself is one of the great natural wonders of the American West: more than 30 kilometres long, more than 500 metres deep, and famous for water clear enough to see the boulders on the lake bed far below the surface. It is ringed by forested mountains, with ski resorts on several of its slopes and small beaches and coves all around its shore.
Rooms and suites at Edgewood
The lodge has 154 rooms, styled in a warm, rustic-chic mountain manner with natural stone and timber. Rooms in the main lodge typically include a private balcony, a gas fireplace and a deep soaking tub, and many look out over the lake or the golf course towards the mountains. The lake-view rooms are well worth the upgrade.
For families or groups, the Villa Suites offer two to five bedrooms, with kitchens, living areas and private patios with fire pits, combining the space of a home with the services of a resort.
The atmosphere throughout is that of a great mountain lodge, with a soaring main hall, stone fireplaces and timber beams, but the rooms are modern and comfortable, with generous bathrooms and plenty of space to spread out after a day on the slopes or the water.
Facilities at Edgewood
The golf course is the resort's other great draw: an 18-hole championship course along the lakeshore, regularly ranked among the best public courses in America and the long-time host of a famous summer celebrity golf tournament. The final holes run right along the water, with the Sierra rising beyond.
Spa Edgewood offers massages and treatments, and there is a pool and fitness centre. Dining includes the Edgewood Restaurant, with lake views and dishes built around local game and produce, The Bistro for all-day dining and weekend brunch, and Brooks' Bar & Deck, a relaxed gastropub overlooking the course.
The sandy private beach is a highlight in summer, with kayaks, paddleboards and pontoon boats for rent, and a ski ambassador service helps guests with lift tickets, rentals and transport in winter.
The mountain moment
The defining Tahoe moment is sunset from the shore at Edgewood. As the sun sinks behind the Sierra on the far side of the lake, the water turns gold, then pink, then deep blue, and the snowy peaks glow above it. In summer, watch from the beach with a drink in hand; in winter, from your fireside balcony.
By day, paddle out over the startlingly clear water, or ride the Heavenly gondola, whose upper terminal looks across the full length of the lake.
Why Edgewood is one of the best mountain hotels
Edgewood Tahoe Resort earns its place because it offers a rare combination: a genuine lakefront setting, a world-class golf course, a beach and easy access to skiing, all at one of America's most beautiful alpine lakes. It is a large resort and close to the bustle of Stateline, but its private shoreline keeps it calm. For a classic, all-season Lake Tahoe stay, it is the address to beat.
It also makes the perfect base for exploring the whole lake: drive the scenic shoreline to Emerald Bay and the west shore, cross into California for South Lake Tahoe's restaurants and nightlife, or head north along the quieter Nevada shore to the beaches and coves of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.
When to go to Edgewood
Edgewood works year-round. Summer, from June to early September, is the season for the beach, paddling and golf, and the busiest time, especially in July, when the celebrity golf tournament fills the area. Winter, from around December to April, brings skiing at Heavenly and cosy fireside evenings. September and early October are often the best time of all, with warm days, clear water and fewer crowds.
