Location: Ourika Valley, Atlas Mountains, Morocco

The kasbah sits on a hill above the Ourika River, at the gateway to the Ourika Valley, in the foothills of the High Atlas, about 45 minutes by car from Marrakech and around an hour from Marrakech airport. Transfers can be arranged, and a car is useful, as the location is remote.

The Ourika Valley is one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech, famous for its Berber villages, terraced fields, walnut groves and the waterfalls of Setti Fatma, further up the valley. Kasbah Tamadot and Kasbah du Toubkal, also in our collection, lie in the neighbouring valleys to the west.

The valley is home to Berber communities who have farmed its terraces for centuries, growing barley, fruit and walnuts, and weekly markets in villages such as Tnine Ourika draw people from across the mountains. Walking through the valley with a local guide offers a genuine insight into rural Moroccan life.

Rooms and suites at Kasbah Bab Ourika

The main building has around 15 rooms, with a further six in the gardens, and a separate retreat complex, along with suites and a private pool villa. Rooms are decorated in a warm, traditional Moroccan style, with handmade furniture, local textiles and tadelakt plaster, and many have terraces or balconies with views of the mountains.

Some suites have private pools, and the Private Pool Villa has its own infinity pool, ideal for families or a special occasion.

The kasbah was built using traditional techniques and local materials, with thick earthen walls that keep rooms cool in summer and warm in winter, and the design draws on the fortified kasbahs of the High Atlas, while adding modern comforts throughout.

Facilities at Kasbah Bab Ourika

The large swimming pool, set in the gardens, looks out over the valley to the Atlas, and the grounds include water gardens and kitchen gardens that supply the restaurant. The restaurant serves a daily-changing menu blending Moroccan and European cuisine, built around organic produce from the gardens and nearby markets, with meals served in a pagoda-style dining room or under the trees.

The kasbah employs staff from the surrounding Berber villages and has strong links with the local community. Activities include guided walks in the valley, visits to Berber villages, mule treks and cooking classes, and the hotel can arrange excursions to Marrakech and the high mountains.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is sunset from the kasbah's rooftop terrace, as the light turns the snowy summits of the High Atlas pink and gold, the valley below fills with shadow and the call to prayer drifts up from the villages. Few places offer such a complete, uninterrupted view of the mountains.

By day, walk through the valley's villages and orchards with a local guide, or drive further up to Setti Fatma, where trails climb past a series of waterfalls into the mountains.

Why Kasbah Bab Ourika is one of the best mountain hotels

Kasbah Bab Ourika earns its place because it offers one of the most spectacular settings of any hotel near Marrakech, with genuine Berber hospitality, excellent food and a strong connection to the local community. It is not a luxury palace, and rates start at around $320 a night, placing it in the mid-range. But for couples and families who want to combine the city with the peace and beauty of the mountains, it is a superb choice.

It was created by Mike McHugo, one of the founders behind Kasbah du Toubkal and the Education For All charity, and it shares the same commitment to responsible travel and to supporting the Berber communities of the High Atlas.

When to go to Kasbah Bab Ourika

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the best times to visit, with warm, sunny days, cool nights and snow on the high peaks in spring. Summer is hot in Marrakech but more comfortable in the valley, though midday walks can be tiring. Winter brings crisp, clear days, cold nights and snow on the Atlas, with the most dramatic views. Ramadan dates move each year, so check them when planning.
