Location: Teton Village, Wyoming

Caldera House stands at the very base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, next to the Aerial Tram, so the lifts, ski school and Teton Village's restaurants and bars are only steps away.

Jackson itself is a genuine Western town, with wooden boardwalks, a town square entered through arches made of shed elk antlers, and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, where the bar stools are saddles. In winter, horse-drawn sleighs carry visitors among thousands of wintering elk on the National Elk Refuge, and snowcoach tours run into Yellowstone to see Old Faithful in the snow. At the top of the tram, Corbet's Cabin is famous for its fresh waffles, a ritual for almost everyone who rides Big Red.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of the most famous ski mountains in North America, with more than 4,000 feet of continuous vertical, legendary steeps such as Corbet's Couloir and the red Aerial Tram, nicknamed Big Red, climbing to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain. Teton Village sits at the base, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Western town of Jackson. Jackson Hole Airport, the only commercial airport inside a US national park, is around 35 minutes away, with direct winter flights from many US cities, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks are on the doorstep.

Suites at Caldera House

There are only eight suites: four two-bedroom suites of around 140 square metres and four four-bedroom suites of around 465 square metres, each more like a private apartment than a hotel room. Interiors mix warm wood, stone, leather and mid-century-inspired furniture with contemporary art, and big windows frame the slopes and the Tetons.

With full living spaces and kitchens, the suites are ideal for families and groups of friends, and the small number of guests gives the whole building the quiet, personal feel of a private club.

Each suite has a full kitchen, a dining area, a living room with a fireplace and generous bathrooms, and the four-bedroom suites in particular feel like private mountain homes. Thoughtful details, from boot dryers to locker space for gear, show that the hotel was designed by and for people who love to ski.

Facilities at Caldera House

The outdoor heated infinity hydro pool is the place to end a ski day, with the slopes rising directly above. There is also a cedar sauna, a large gym with a yoga and movement space, a treatment room and in-suite massages.

The on-site ski shop and ski valet make mornings effortless. Old Yellowstone Garage serves northern Italian cooking and wood-fired pizza, Southcable Café covers coffee and quick bites, and the Alpine Club on the third floor is a lounge and bar for guests.

The staff-to-guest ratio is unusually high, and the service is personal and discreet, closer to a private chalet than a hotel. The hotel can arrange private guides, ski lessons, backcountry tours on Teton Pass and evening transfers to Jackson town for dinner, and the restaurants of Teton Village are on the doorstep.

The mountain moment

The Caldera House moment is a powder morning. You collect your skis from the valet, walk a few steps to the tram and are among the first to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, then ski deep, untracked snow back down to the base. By mid-afternoon you are in the infinity hydro pool, watching the tram swing up into the clouds above you.

Why Caldera House is one of the best mountain hotels

Caldera House earns its place for intimacy, design and location. Eight huge, beautifully designed suites beside the tram offer the most private and convenient way to ski Jackson Hole. It is extremely expensive, with no large spa or pool, and it suits groups and families who book a suite rather than couples looking for a standard room. But for those who want a private, design-led base at the foot of the mountain, nothing in Jackson Hole compares.

When to go to Caldera House

The ski season usually runs from early December to early April, with the best snow from January to March. Holiday weeks book out far in advance, especially with only eight suites.

Summer brings tram rides to the summit, hiking, mountain biking and wildlife in Grand Teton National Park, with Yellowstone a scenic day trip.

January and February bring the deepest snow and the best powder, while March offers sunshine, longer days and spring skiing. In summer and autumn, the suites are a spacious base for exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks, with hiking, fly fishing, rafting and wildlife watching, and golden aspens in late September.
