Location: Teton Village, Wyoming

The hotel is right on the slopes at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, with ski-in, ski-out access. The Aerial Tram and the Bridger Gondola are each about three minutes' walk away, and the Teewinot and Eagle's Rest lifts, ideal for beginners and children, are just as close.

Jackson itself is a genuine Western town, with wooden boardwalks, a town square entered through arches made of shed elk antlers, and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, where the bar stools are saddles. In winter, horse-drawn sleighs carry visitors among thousands of wintering elk on the National Elk Refuge, and snowcoach tours run into Yellowstone to see Old Faithful in the snow. At the top of the tram, Corbet's Cabin is famous for its fresh waffles, a ritual for almost everyone who rides Big Red.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of the most famous ski mountains in North America, with more than 4,000 feet of continuous vertical, legendary steeps such as Corbet's Couloir and the red Aerial Tram, nicknamed Big Red, climbing to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain. Teton Village sits at the base, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Western town of Jackson. Jackson Hole Airport, the only commercial airport inside a US national park, is around 35 minutes away, with direct winter flights from many US cities, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks are on the doorstep.

Rooms and suites at Four Seasons Jackson Hole

There are around 180 rooms, suites and residences, starting at around 46 square metres and rising to a five-bedroom penthouse. The style is warm Western luxury: timber, stone, leather and soft woollen throws, with gas fireplaces in many rooms and big windows facing the mountain or the valley.

Families will find suites and private residences with living areas and kitchens, while couples should ask for a mountain-view room to watch the tram glide up Rendezvous Mountain.

Rooms are generously sized by ski-hotel standards, with deep soaking tubs, heated bathroom floors in many categories and balconies that make the most of the setting. The service is a big part of the experience: staff remember names, the concierge can arrange anything from a private ski guide to a wildlife safari, and families are given thoughtful extras for children.

Facilities at Four Seasons Jackson Hole

There is an outdoor heated pool and three hot tubs facing the slopes, as well as an indoor pool, and a spa offering massages designed for tired ski legs. The ski concierge takes care of rentals, lift tickets, boot warming and storage.

Dining includes Westbank Grill, the hotel's steakhouse, serving breakfast and dinner; The Handle Bar, a lively slopeside après-ski spot with a big terrace; the Ascent Lounge for cocktails; and a poolside café. A kids' club, available for a fee, keeps younger guests busy, and the hotel arranges ski school, wildlife safaris and snowmobiling to Yellowstone.

The location also makes it easy to try the rest of Jackson Hole: snowshoe tours, dog sledding, ice skating in Teton Village and evening sleigh rides can all be arranged, and the town of Jackson is about 25 minutes away by car or shuttle for dinner, shopping and the famous Cowboy Bar.

The mountain moment

The Jackson Hole moment is the ride up Big Red. You walk a few minutes from the hotel, step into the tram and rise more than 4,000 feet to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, with the jagged Tetons filling the windows. Experts peer down Corbet's Couloir; everyone else takes the long cruise back to the hotel's door and the steaming hot tubs below the slopes.

Why Four Seasons Jackson Hole is one of the best mountain hotels

Four Seasons Jackson Hole earns its place for location and service. True ski-in, ski-out access at the foot of one of North America's great mountains, excellent pools and dining, and outstanding family facilities make it the easiest way to ski Jackson Hole in comfort. It is large and expensive, and Teton Village is a resort base rather than a historic town, though Jackson's Western charm is only a short drive away.

When to go to Four Seasons Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole's ski season usually runs from late November or early December to early April, with the deepest snow from January to March. Christmas, New Year and Presidents' Day are the busiest and most expensive weeks.

Summer, from June to September, is just as spectacular, with the tram running to the summit for hiking, wildlife viewing in Grand Teton National Park, fly fishing, rafting and day trips to Yellowstone.

For the deepest snow and the best chance of powder days, go in January and February. March brings longer, sunnier days and a lively spring atmosphere, while early December can offer quieter slopes and better value before the holidays. Autumn, from September to early October, is wonderful for wildlife, with elk bugling in the national parks and golden aspens across the valley.
