Location: Dilijan, Armenia

Armenia is a mountain country in the Lesser Caucasus, south of the great range, and Dilijan, often called the Switzerland of Armenia, is its greenest corner: a spa town in forested hills, surrounded by Dilijan National Park, with medieval monasteries such as Haghartsin and Goshavank hidden in the woods and Lake Sevan nearby.

The hotel occupies the restored houses of Sharambeyan Street, in the old town, about an hour and a half by road from Yerevan's Zvartnots airport.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is a walk through the forest to the monastery of Haghartsin, its stone churches hidden among the trees, followed by dinner on the terrace as evening falls over Dilijan.

On another day, drive to Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world.

Why Tufenkian Old Dilijan is one of the best mountain hotels
