Suvretta House is the grand hotel of St. Moritz for people who love the mountains as much as the glamour. Opened in 1912 and set on its own private estate on the wooded Suvretta hillside, a couple of kilometres west of the village, it looks like a Belle Époque castle above the larches. It is the only true ski-in, ski-out hotel in St. Moritz, with its own lift up to the Corviglia ski area, and with extensive children's clubs, an ice rink, curling, golf and a large spa, it is one of the finest family hotels in the Alps.

Location: St. Moritz, Switzerland
St. Moritz sits at around 1,800 metres in the Upper Engadine, a high, sunny valley of lakes and larch forests in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, famous for its dry 'champagne climate' and more than 300 days of sunshine a year. It has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948, and its frozen lake hosts horse racing, polo and cricket on the ice each winter. The nearest major airport is Zurich, around three to three and a half hours away by road or train, and the journey on the Rhaetian Railway, over the Albula line, is one of the most beautiful in the Alps.
Suvretta House stands about two kilometres west of the centre, on a sunny, wooded slope above Champfèr and the lakes of the Upper Engadine, with open views down the valley towards Maloja. The hotel's shuttles connect it with the village and other ski areas, but the setting feels peaceful and private, more like a country estate than a town hotel.

Rooms at Suvretta House
There are 181 rooms and suites, around 45 of them with balconies, many facing the lakes or the mountains. A renovation by the British designer Sue Freeman refreshed the interiors in an elegant 'Alpine chic' style, with soft colours, natural wood and traditional Engadine touches, while keeping the grand public rooms, such as the oak-panelled Grand Restaurant, as they were.
Family rooms and connecting rooms are plentiful, and the hotel's scale means it rarely feels crowded, even in high season.
Facilities at Suvretta House
The spa and sports club has a 25-metre pool, a heated outdoor whirlpool, a range of saunas, treatment rooms and a gym, and a new spa area opened for the 2026 winter season. Outside, there is a private ice rink, four curling rinks, tennis courts in summer and a small golf course with its own golf school.
For families, Suvretta House is outstanding, with a Kiddy Club, an indoor play palace, a children's ski slope above the hotel and an evening Teddy Club where children dine together. The Grand Restaurant serves classic French cuisine, with a formal dress code in the evening, while the Suvretta Stube offers Graubünden specialities, and the hotel runs its own mountain restaurants, including the Trutz, beside the Randolins lift at more than 2,200 metres.

The mountain moment
The defining moment is clicking into your skis at the hotel door and riding the Suvretta lift up through the larch forest to Randolins, then on to the wide, sunny pistes of Corviglia, with the frozen lakes of the Engadine spread out below. One of Switzerland's first ski lifts opened here in 1935, and the film star Douglas Fairbanks was among the first to ride it.
At the end of the day, ski back to the door, warm up in the outdoor whirlpool, then take afternoon tea in the hall as the light fades over the valley.
Why Suvretta House is one of the best mountain hotels
Suvretta House earns its place because it combines the grandeur of a historic palace hotel with genuine mountain access and a relaxed, family-friendly spirit. Its estate setting, its own lift and its range of sports make it feel like a world of its own, while still being minutes from the centre of St. Moritz.
For a livelier, more central stay, compare it with Badrutt's Palace or the Kulm, or for a smaller, all-suite hotel, the Carlton. Our guide to the best luxury hotels in St. Moritz compares them all.
When to go to Suvretta House
Suvretta House opens for a winter season, from December to around early April, and a summer season, from late June to early September. Families should book early for Christmas, New Year and February half-term. Summer brings hiking, mountain biking, golf, tennis and the lakes of the Engadine. Check the hotel for exact season dates.
