Location: Ts'ehlanyane National Park, Lesotho

The lodge lies in the Maluti Mountains of northern Lesotho, at the edge of Ts'ehlanyane National Park, an area of high peaks, river gorges and rare montane forest. Lesotho is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres, and its highlands rise to more than 3,400 metres. The lodge is a few hours' drive from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, crossing the border, and it is usually booked as part of a tailor-made South African trip.

Lesotho is one of Africa's great undiscovered mountain countries. Its highlands are crossed by spectacular passes, including the famous Sani Pass, and dotted with waterfalls, such as the Maletsunyane Falls, which plunge almost 200 metres into a gorge. The Basotho people are famous for their woollen blankets and conical straw hats, the mokorotlo, which appears on the national flag, and for their horsemanship: ponies are still the main way of travelling through the mountains. Many visitors combine Lesotho with the Drakensberg, just across the border in South Africa.

Chalets at Maliba Mountain Lodge

There are ten stone-and-thatch chalets, each with an open fireplace, underfloor heating, a four-poster bed, a large bathroom with a tub, heated towel rails and a private deck looking out over the mountains. They are warm and romantic, ideal for cold highland nights.

The lodge also has a children's activity centre, making it a good choice for families, and the staff, drawn from the surrounding villages, are known for their warm Basotho hospitality. Guests often say that the welcome, the silence and the stars are what make Maliba so special.

Facilities at Maliba Mountain Lodge

The main lodge, built from thatch, stone and timber, has a domed lounge with four open fireplaces, a restaurant and a terrace. There is a small wellness spa, and in summer guests can swim in natural mountain springs. Activities include hiking on marked trails, rock climbing, birdwatching and riding the sure-footed Basotho ponies, as well as visits to Basotho villages, where shepherds still wear the traditional blankets and conical hats. In winter, there is even skiing at the small resort of Afriski.

The mountain moment

The Maliba moment is a ride on a Basotho pony along a high mountain trail, passing shepherds wrapped in bright blankets, with deep valleys falling away beneath you. Back at the lodge, a fire is lit in your chalet, and the stars are brighter than you have ever seen.

As evening falls, the shepherds bring their flocks down from the hills, smoke rises from the villages in the valley, and the peaks of the Maluti turn pink in the last light.

On clear winter mornings, frost covers the grasslands and snow dusts the high peaks, and the air is so clear that the mountains seem close enough to touch.

Why Maliba is one of the best mountain hotels

Maliba earns its place for its remote setting, its warmth and its fair price. It opens up one of Africa's most spectacular and least-known mountain countries, and offers authentic culture and adventure with real comfort. It is remote, the facilities are simple compared with big safari lodges, and it is usually booked through specialists. But for adventurous travellers, it is a gem.

For South Africa's mountains, see Bushmans Kloof in the Cederberg or Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse in the Drakensberg.

Plan at least two or three nights to make the journey worthwhile and to explore the trails and villages. Bring warm layers, as mountain nights are cold even in summer, and good hiking boots. Many travellers combine Maliba with the Drakensberg, the Sani Pass and the battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, or with Johannesburg and a Kruger safari.

When to go to Maliba Mountain Lodge

Summer, from November to March, brings green valleys, wildflowers, warm days and afternoon thunderstorms, and is ideal for hiking and swimming in the mountain springs. Spring and autumn are clear and mild. Winter, from June to August, is cold and dry, with snow on the high peaks and skiing at Afriski.
