Location: El Chaltén, Patagonia, Argentina

The hotel sits in El Chaltén, in Santa Cruz province, at the northern edge of Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village was founded in 1985 and has grown rapidly as a base for hikers and climbers, with restaurants, bakeries, breweries and gear shops lining its streets.

Most visitors fly to El Calafate, around three hours away by road, often combining a visit with the Perito Moreno Glacier. Explora El Chaltén, also in our collection, lies in a private reserve outside the village.

El Chaltén itself is a relaxed, friendly village with a strong outdoor culture, where climbers from around the world gather to attempt Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, and hikers return in the evenings to the village's breweries and restaurants. Its name comes from the Tehuelche word for Fitz Roy, meaning smoking mountain, after the clouds that often wrap its summit.

Rooms and suites at Hostería Senderos

Rooms are inspired by alpine lodges and Patagonian farmhouses, with plenty of exposed wood and beams, warm textiles and comfortable beds. The premium rooms offer panoramic views towards the mountains, and they are worth booking for the chance to see Fitz Roy from your window on a clear morning.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and the small size of the hotel means a personal welcome after a long day on the trails.

The hotel's style, with its warm wood and simple, comfortable furnishings, makes it a welcoming place to return to after long days on the trails, and the staff are happy to help with advice on routes, weather and transport to trailheads outside the village.

Facilities at Hostería Senderos

The restaurant serves classic Argentine dishes, from steaks and Patagonian lamb to hearty soups and pasta, with a good selection of Argentine wines, ideal after a day of hiking. The lounge, with its open log fire, is the place to relax and plan the next day's adventures.

Facilities are simple, with no spa or pool, but the location is everything: trailheads to Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre and other famous viewpoints start within walking distance, and the village's restaurants and shops are on the doorstep.

The mountain moment

The defining moment is the hike to Laguna de los Tres, the most famous trail in El Chaltén, a long day that ends with a steep climb to a glacial lake at the very foot of Fitz Roy. Arrive early, and you may see the granite tower glow red at sunrise, the phenomenon locals call the amanecer de fuego.

An easier but equally memorable walk leads to Laguna Torre, beneath the needle-like spire of Cerro Torre, one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb.

Why Hostería Senderos is one of the best mountain hotels

Hostería Senderos earns its place in our Affordable stays collection because it offers a comfortable, characterful base in El Chaltén at a fair price, with good food and a warm atmosphere. It is simple compared with the luxury lodges of Patagonia, and prices rise in peak season. But for hikers who want to start their adventures from the door, it is an excellent choice.

It also gives travellers a choice within our collection: the all-inclusive luxury of Explora El Chaltén, outside the village, or the independence and value of Senderos, in the heart of the trekking capital.

Prices vary by season, and rates in peak summer can rise well above the off-season, so it is worth booking early or travelling in spring or autumn for the best value.

When to go to Hostería Senderos

The hiking season runs from around October to April, with the longest days and warmest weather from December to February, when the village is busiest and prices are highest. Spring offers fewer crowds and fresh greenery, while autumn, in March and April, brings stunning colours to the lenga forests and calmer days. Many businesses in the village close in winter. Always pack layers: Patagonian weather can change quickly.
