Bürgenstock Resort, Lake Lucerne, Switzerland

Bürgenstock Resort is perched on a forested ridge 500 metres above Lake Lucerne, and its cliff-edge infinity pool, seemingly suspended over the water, is one of the most famous hotel pools in Switzerland. A hotel has stood on this ridge since 1873, welcoming royalty, statesmen and film stars; Audrey Hepburn married here in 1954. Rebuilt and reopened in 2017, the resort now combines several hotels, a vast spa and a dozen restaurants on a car-free plateau with views across the lake to the Alps.

Location: Lake Lucerne, Switzerland

The resort sits at around 870 metres on the Bürgenstock ridge, on the southern shore of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland. Lucerne is about half an hour away by road or, far more memorably, by boat across the lake to the pier at Kehrsiten, where a red historic funicular climbs straight up to the resort.

Zurich Airport is around an hour by road. From the plateau, the views take in Lucerne, the lake's many arms and the peaks of Pilatus and Rigi.

The Bürgenstock plateau itself is a world apart: a car-free landscape of meadows, forests and cliffs, with walking paths, viewpoints and historic buildings scattered across the ridge. The resort's position, high above the water yet only a short boat ride from Lucerne, gives it the feeling of a private mountain kingdom.

Rooms and suites at Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock is a resort of several hotels. The flagship Bürgenstock Hotel has 82 rooms and 20 suites, with contemporary interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies facing the lake; the Royal Suite occupies the entire top floor. The Palace, the original 1873 hotel, offers a more classic, historic style, and the Waldhotel is a health and medical retreat with its own treatments and programmes. There are also residences for longer stays.

Lake-view rooms are the ones to book, and the views from the upper floors are extraordinary.

Interiors combine contemporary Swiss design with warm natural materials and a collection of art and historic pieces from the resort's long past, and service is polished and attentive in the grand Swiss manner. Families will find interconnecting rooms and larger suites.

Facilities at Bürgenstock

The Alpine Spa covers around 10,000 square metres and is one of the largest and most impressive in the Alps. Its centrepiece is the heated infinity pool, cantilevered over the cliff and lit at night, alongside indoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, relaxation areas and a long menu of treatments.

The resort has around a dozen restaurants and bars, ranging from Asian cuisine at Spices Kitchen & Terrace to Swiss specialities and a panorama restaurant in a glass box overhanging the slope. There are tennis courts, a golf course, a fitness centre and children's facilities, and the plateau is laced with walking paths.

For a resort of this scale, the attention to history is striking. The original funicular, the restored Palace and the many photographs of famous guests over the decades all recall the Bürgenstock's golden age, when Hollywood stars and world leaders came here to escape the spotlight.

The mountain moment

The defining experience is the Felsenweg, a cliff path carved into the rock face of the Bürgenstock in the early twentieth century, leading to the Hammetschwand Lift, an extraordinary glass-and-steel elevator, often described as the highest exterior lift in Europe, which climbs the sheer cliff to a viewpoint high above the lake. From the top, the panorama stretches across Lake Lucerne, central Switzerland and the Alps.

At dusk, a swim in the infinity pool, with the lights of Lucerne glittering across the water, is equally unforgettable.

Why Bürgenstock is one of the best mountain hotels

Bürgenstock earns its place because it offers one of the most spectacular settings of any resort in Europe, combining lake, mountains and a superb spa in one place. It is large and corporate in style, and very expensive. But its history, its views and its extraordinary infinity pool make it a destination in its own right, and a perfect base for exploring Lucerne and the mountains of central Switzerland.

When to go to Bürgenstock

Bürgenstock is open year-round. Summer, from June to September, is ideal for the lake, walking the Felsenweg and long evenings on the terraces, and it is the busiest season; boats from Lucerne run most frequently then. Spring and autumn bring quieter, clear days, perfect for the spa. Winter is peaceful and atmospheric, with snow on the surrounding peaks and the infinity pool steaming in the cold air; skiing is a short drive away at Engelberg.
