Location: Grindelwald, Switzerland
The hotel stands in the centre of Grindelwald, at around 1,030 metres in the Bernese Oberland, close to the railway station and about 200 metres from the gondola to First. Interlaken is around 30 minutes by train or car, and Zurich and Bern airports are within about two hours and one hour respectively.
The village sits in a broad, green valley ringed by some of the most famous mountains in the Alps: the Eiger, the Wetterhorn and, beyond, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. The Jungfrau-Aletsch region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the largest glacier in the Alps, and the Jungfraujoch railway, the highest in Europe, climbs from nearby Kleine Scheidegg to the "Top of Europe" at around 3,450 metres.
Grindelwald is one of the oldest mountain resorts in Switzerland, drawing British climbers and travellers since the nineteenth century, and the village still has a lively, international atmosphere, with traditional chalets, hotels, shops and restaurants lining its main street, and cowbells ringing on the pastures above in summer.
Rooms and suites at Bergwelt
The resort has around 90 rooms, suites, apartments and residences, with space for up to six guests in the larger units, making it a good choice for families and groups. The style is modern alpine, with lots of wood, velvet fabrics, warm colours and large glazed façades and terraces.
Some rooms have unobstructed views of the Eiger, and these are well worth requesting. The apartments and residences, with kitchens and living areas, are ideal for longer stays, while the suites offer a more classic hotel experience with extra space.
The resort's sustainability credentials are strong too: it holds the highest level of the Swisstainable label, and its design makes extensive use of local materials. The underground car park, with around 70 spaces, is a practical bonus in a busy village where parking can be difficult.
Facilities at Bergwelt
The Fire & Ice Spa, covering around 800 square metres, includes an indoor pool and an outdoor pool facing the mountains, along with saunas, steam rooms and relaxation areas, and spa access is included in the room rate. Swimming outdoors with the Eiger's north face above you is a highlight, especially on a snowy winter evening.
BG's Grill Restaurant, led by executive chef Urs Gschwend, serves grill specialities alongside vegetarian and vegan options, and the rustic Pinte offers a more traditional Swiss atmosphere a short walk away. There is also the Seven Spirits Bar, a cigar lounge and an underground car park. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
The mountain moment
The defining Grindelwald moment is the view of the Eiger's north face at sunset, when the vast, dark wall of rock and ice glows orange above the village. It is one of the most famous mountain faces in the world, the scene of legendary climbs and tragedies.
By day, take the gondola to First and walk the cliff walk, suspended over the void, or hike the easy trail to Bachalpsee, a mountain lake that mirrors the peaks. In winter, the Jungfrau ski region offers around 200 kilometres of pistes, and Grindelwald's sledging runs, including some of the longest in the Alps, are hugely popular with families.
Why Bergwelt is one of the best mountain hotels
Bergwelt Grindelwald earns its place because it offers a fresh, design-led stay in one of the world's great mountain villages, with an excellent spa and superb Eiger views. Grindelwald is busy, especially in summer, when visitors from around the world flock to the Jungfrau region, and the hotel is in the village centre rather than a secluded spot. But for those who want comfort, style and convenience as a base for exploring, it is a strong choice.
It also adds a key destination to our Alps collection: the Jungfrau region, with its trains, glaciers and classic views, is among the most searched and loved mountain areas in Switzerland, and Bergwelt is one of its most stylish places to stay.
When to go to Bergwelt
Grindelwald is a year-round destination. Winter, from December to April, brings skiing, sledging and snowy village evenings, with Christmas, New Year and February the busiest periods. Summer, from June to September, is peak season for hiking, mountain railways and lakes, and the most crowded time. Late spring and autumn are quieter, with lower prices, though some lifts close for maintenance between seasons. Book Eiger-view rooms early.
