Location: Crans-Montana, Switzerland

Crans-Montana stands on a wide, sunny plateau at around 1,500 metres, high above the Rhône valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. It is one of the sunniest resorts in the Alps, and its south-facing balcony looks across the valley to a long line of great peaks, from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc on a clear day. In winter, its ski area of around 140 kilometres climbs to the Plaine Morte glacier; in summer, it is famous for golf, above all the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, home of the European Masters, as well as hiking, biking and its small lakes. Sion airport is about 30 to 40 minutes away by road, and Geneva around two hours by train to Sierre, then a funicular up to the plateau.

The hotel stands in the pine forest just above the main Crans gondola, with direct access to the Chetzeron slope, so you can ski to and from the door in winter. In summer, the golf courses, hiking trails and the resort centre are all close by.

There are around 47 rooms and suites, inspired by traditional Swiss chalets, with bay windows and private terraces looking out across the Rhône valley to the Matterhorn and the Mont Blanc massif. Rooms start at around 47 square metres, and the largest suites, of around 150 square metres, include private saunas.

For families and groups, private residences of three to five bedrooms, from around 210 to 330 square metres, come with the full services of the hotel.

Facilities at Six Senses Crans-Montana

The Six Senses Spa covers around 2,000 square metres, with nine treatment rooms, an indoor pool, a rooftop pool with mountain views, a Jacuzzi, steam room, saunas, a cold-water pool, a yoga studio and a biohacking recovery lounge. Wellness programmes, from sleep to fitness, are a speciality.

Byakko serves Japanese-inspired cuisine, with sushi and dishes such as hoba miso, and the all-day Wild Cabin brasserie serves Swiss classics with a modern twist, beside the slopes. The mountain moment

The defining moment is a swim in the rooftop pool at the end of a winter afternoon, the steam rising into the cold air as the sun sets over the Alps and the snow on the peaks across the valley turns pink.

In summer, start the day with yoga, play a round at Crans-sur-Sierre, then return for a treatment and a Japanese dinner at Byakko.

Why Six Senses Crans-Montana is one of the best mountain hotels

Six Senses Crans-Montana earns its place because it combines a true ski-in, ski-out position with one of the best spas in the Swiss Alps and a contemporary, nature-led style. It suits couples, wellness lovers and families, in winter or summer.

For golfers, compare it with Guarda Golf Hotel & Residences, on the fairway of the Jack Nicklaus course. For a smaller, more adventurous stay higher on the mountain, see Chetzeron, and for Switzerland's most famous mountain views, Riffelalp Resort 2222m in Zermatt.

When to go to Six Senses Crans-Montana

The ski season usually runs from December to April, and Crans-Montana is known for its sunshine, so even midwinter days are often bright. Summer, from June to September, brings golf, hiking, biking and the European Masters, and September is quieter, with clear, settled weather. Check opening dates, as many Alpine hotels close for short periods in spring and autumn.
